In this talk, I invite you to come with me into presence - NOW. At some point, we will all come to terms with the finite nature of our lives. At first it's an intellectual idea that all of us know. But then, at some point, you will have the realization of just how precious and precarious life is. This realization can bring with it, what Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., described as the fierce urgency of now. We can pass the time, attending to the story in our minds ... and that time will pass. Or, we can drop deeply into this amazing moment - now - that is always waiting for us. The present moment is all that we have. And we have it right now.

The fierce urgency of now,

This is something that Martin Luther King said,

But feels to me like a profoundly spiritual statement.

When we're confronted with the true nature of mortality,

When we are made aware,

Truly of our decisive end,

That this show doesn't go on forever.

In fact,

It can be cut short at any time.

This is something we can know intellectually,

We all do,

But there's a moment where everybody comes to face this fact more presently,

More intimately.

And when you receive such a realization,

The present moment becomes more precious,

More imbued with feeling,

Desire,

Gratitude,

Sensation,

All the emotions,

All of it wrapped up here and now in this moment,

Which brings a certain urgency not to do things so much,

Although there's that,

The aspect that Dr.

King was focusing on,

But to be really here now,

Truly here,

Truly present,

Really showing up for the moment that we're in,

Acknowledging every aspect of it,

Acknowledging from the befuddlement of why this moment even exists to all the relations,

Partners,

Lovers,

Colleagues,

As well as our pets,

Our animals,

The earth,

All of the elements,

All of life,

To be overwhelmed by the power of now,

Of this moment,

Is something we can all look to,

We can all work to find and to renew and to reveal each and every moment,

As it is a practice,

And it is a moment-by-moment,

Hour-by-hour,

Day-by-day practice,

To take a step back from the story,

The conundrums,

The upsets,

The fears,

The mistakes,

The self-recriminations,

And to drop into this moment where there is so much happening,

So much available,

So much richness,

Power,

Energy,

Releasing the shackles of interpretation,

Judgment,

Knowing,

And simply showing up,

Being here now,

With the recognition that this awareness,

As we have it in life,

Is precious,

To acknowledge it,

To drop into this moment and find the joy and this fierce urgency to be here now.
