On this evening,
As the earth turns from the sun,
As the shadow of the night rises inexorably nearer,
Let us lay down the anxiety of should have and be here now.
Imagine a jar of beads,
Multicolored glass.
Lift the jar so that sunlight filters through.
Each of these beads is a task of the day.
Some you have completed,
Some you will need to revisit,
And some few are those that are left undone,
The should haves.
Fold up one of these latter,
A task you should have done,
That phone call you should have made,
Appointment you should have booked,
Or that unpleasant task you simply avoided,
Not wishing to do it.
Hold it up to the light now and examine its color and shape,
And as you do,
Be aware of the internal sensation that arises,
The regret,
The worry,
The guilt.
What is the color and texture of this sensation?
Where do you feel it?
Now let that feeling go.
Let it move up your arm and into that glass bead.
Let that glass bead of should have capture all the feelings of regret,
Worry,
Of guilt.
Smile now and breathe easily,
And set it aside for another day.
Go through each bead from the jar,
Pausing only over the should haves,
And then set each aside until the jar is empty and all the day's tasks are behind you.
Now,
Done for the day,
Done for the night,
Done for the evening,
Breathe easily now.
The should haves are behind you,
They can rest until another day.
Now the hours lie before you,
Spaciousness,
Moments of gentleness and grace,
Of acceptance,
This great gift of life that lies between the busyness of days.
Peace to you.
Have a beautiful evening.
