This is a visualization called the eye of an eagle or a guardian angel.
This is a practice that will require you to listen to a recording at first.
Once you've done it a few times and learned the visualization,
You'll be able to guide yourself through it without this recording.
In our meditations,
We usually keep focused in the present moment.
In our body sensations,
Often focusing our awareness on our breathing,
We fill our awareness with the events of the present moment,
Body sensations,
And transient emotions and thoughts.
However,
This is a different kind of exercise where we use the wonderful and creative power of our imagination.
Begin by sitting in a comfortable position,
Adjusting your body as needed.
You can lower or close your eyes as you wish.
Becoming aware of your breath wherever it is most vivid in your body.
Then expand your awareness to include your entire body as it sits and breathes.
Now expand your awareness to include the room you're sitting in,
Your body,
The chair you're sitting in,
Any other furniture,
The floor,
And the ceiling.
Expanding your awareness to the entire room.
Next,
Imagine that you can float up to the ceiling and look down.
From that perspective,
You can see the entire room,
Your body sitting,
The furniture,
And other surroundings.
Now imagine that you can float up through the ceiling and ascend into the sky,
Into the heavens,
And look down from on high.
You can see everything that is happening far below you,
Seeing with the eyes of an eagle or the eyes of a guardian angel or spirit or with the eyes of God.
From high above,
You can see this tiny person in this room doing this exercise.
Now imagine that you can see this little person who has your name as they go about their lives,
Waking up,
Getting ready for the day,
Going to work,
Relating with family,
Patients,
Coworkers,
Or staff.
Watch this little person who has your name from high up in the sky,
High above,
As this person moves about living their life.
Waking,
Eating,
Working,
Interacting with other people,
Going home,
Sleeping,
Waking,
Eating,
Talking.
Whatever their life involves,
You see them moving through times of joy and times of challenge.
How do you feel about this person as you watch them?
If you could whisper a few words of encouragement into their ear,
What would you say?
If you could give them one non-material gift to help them through their life,
What would you give them?
One non-material gift to help them through their life.
Now you descend from up in the heavens,
Down,
Down,
Back into the room,
Into your chair,
Aware again of your body as it sits and breathes.
When you look down from high up with the eyes of an eagle or a guardian angel or of God,
How did you feel about that person who has your name?
What message did you give yourself?
What non-material gift did you give yourself to help you through life?
How is this different from how you usually talk or treat or see yourself?
Thank you for doing this exercise.
Once you've done it a few times using this recording,
You can begin to guide yourself through it.
