Hello and welcome.
I am Ipek Williamson and today I want to demystify something that comes up constantly in my work with especially leaders,
Entrepreneurs and high performers and yet is rarely explained in plain terms.
Nervous system regulation.
Sounds clinical,
Right?
Sounds like something a specialist does with equipment or something in a hospital.
It's neither of those things.
It's something you are doing or not doing every single day.
And once you understand it,
You will never relate to stress the same way again.
Here is my simple version.
Your nervous system is your body's primary surveillance system.
Every single moment of every single day,
It's running one core question.
Am I safe right now?
And based on the answer it arrives at,
It puts you into one of two operating modes.
The first mode is Activation.
What most people know as the stress response or fight and flight.
In this mode,
Your heart rate increases,
Stress hormones flood all your body,
Digestion slows,
And your attention narrows.
Your body is preparing to deal with a threat.
So you feel reactive,
You feel scattered,
Impatient.
Sometimes even snappy.
And your thinking becomes less nuanced.
Creativity essentially goes offline.
The second mode is regulation.
The parasympathetic state,
Sometimes called rest and digest.
In this mode,
Your heart rate settles.
Your muscles soften.
Your digestion functions well,
And your brain has access to its full range.
You feel calmer.
Clear.
Focused.
And more creative.
You make better decisions.
Your relationships.
Get warmer.
You are.
In the fullest sense resourced.
And here is what most people miss.
You are moving between those two states all day long.
The question is whether you are doing it consciously or not.
Or whether you are being moved by your circumstances.
Nervous system regulation simply means learning to shift from activation back to regulation on purpose.
Rather than waiting for the threat to pass on its own.
And it looks like this in real life.
A difficult email arrives,
Your body immediately responds,
Tight chest,
Rapid breathing,
A flash of irritation.
Instead of firing back immediately,
You take three slow,
Exhale-heavy breaths.
Your nervous system shift.
Your prefrontal cortex.
Comes back online.
And then you respond.
Let's say you are about to walk into a high-stakes meeting.
You place a hand on your heart for 30 seconds.
And breathe slowly.
Your heart rate settles.
You arrive present and grounded.
Rather than wired and reactive.
Let's say you feel overwhelmed at your desk.
You step outside.
You put your feet on the ground.
You look at something in the distance,
Letting your eyes soften.
And your gaze widen.
Your peripheral vision activates,
Which is a known signal to the nervous system that the immediate environment is safe.
Done.
Your overwhelm eases.
And none of this is mystical.
All of it is physiology.
Your body has a built-in system for shifting out of stress.
Regulation is simply learning where the switches are and using them with intention.
What makes this powerful for especially high performers is the performance advantage.
A regulated nervous system makes better decisions.
Communicates more skillfully.
Leads with more clarity and sustains energy over a longer period.
Chronic activation.
Running on cortisol and adrenaline all the time,
Is effective short term.
Yet enormously costly over time.
The regulated leader.
As a genuine edge.
If you want to explore this more deeply.
My video,
Why Your Nervous System Matters on InsideTimer,
Takes you further into this topic.
And includes a practice that activates the parasympathetic system in under two minutes.
You will find it on my profile.
Your nervous system is not your enemy.
It is the most sophisticated stress management system in existence.
You just need to learn to work with it.
Rather than.
Against it.
I hope you find this helpful.
Have a gorgeous day.
