Have you ever found yourself going over the same thought again and again and still not feeling any better?
Or made a simple decision feel so complicated that you ended up more confused than when you started?
That's called overthinking.
And if it happens to you regularly,
You are in very good company.
Overthinking is one of the most common experiences people report and one of the most misunderstood.
Because most of us believe that if we just think about something enough,
We will eventually solve it,
Feel better about it,
Or find the certainty we are looking for.
We don't.
More thinking,
In most cases,
Creates even more doubt,
Not more clarity.
Here is what is actually happening.
When the mind senses uncertainty or threat,
Even a small one,
It activates a problem-solving mode.
It starts generating scenarios,
Weighing possibilities,
And preparing for outcomes.
This is incredibly useful in genuinely complex situations,
But the mind often applies the same strategy to things it cannot actually solve through thinking,
Like relationship anxiety,
Future uncertainties and questions of self-worth.
And so it keeps thinking and thinking.
Not because it's finding answers,
But because stopping feels dangerous.
Overthinking is the mind's attempt to control what it cannot control.
It's worry dressed up as problem solving.
And the way out is not to think harder,
It's stepping out of the thinking loop altogether,
Even if briefly,
And returning to the body.
Here is a technique that I find useful.
The next time you notice you are in a loop,
When you catch yourself thinking the same thought for the third or fourth time,
Say to yourself.
I notice I am overthinking this right now.
That noticing alone creates a small but important shift.
You move from inside the thought to outside it,
From being the thinker to observing the thinking.
Then bring your attention to your body or take one slow breath.
Feel your feet.
Look at something in your immediate environment.
Really look at it as if you are seeing it for the first time.
Do it right now.
I'm waiting.
You know what you did?
You have just interrupted the loop.
The mind may start again,
And that's okay.
Simply notice and return.
Every time you do this,
You are building the muscle of awareness that overthinking cannot survive in.
Clarity doesn't come from more thinking.
It comes from stepping back,
Getting quiet,
And letting the answer surface on its own.
Most of the time.
It does.
