Kids can have a hard time understanding the feeling of anxiety. In this meditation, we use the analogy of shaking a jar full of water and glitter to explain the concept to "racing thoughts". As the shaking stops, and we use stillness and breath, we can watch the glitter (aka our racing thoughts) settle. Developing an understanding for common emotions is important in order to process them more effectively. Namaste!

Hi there,

How are you today?

Awesome.

So we're going to take a few minutes today and sit with ourselves in silence.

So first let's make sure we're really comfortable.

You might want to stretch,

Keep yourself really big stretch,

Put your hands above your head,

Stretch it out.

You can be sitting or you can be laying down.

Let's make sure you're just really,

Really,

Really comfortable.

Now go ahead and close your eyes really slowly.

Good job.

Now let's take a deep breath together.

Ready?

Okay,

Breathe in as deep as you can.

And breathe out.

Let's do that again.

Breathe in deep.

And breathe out.

Alright,

One more.

When you breathe out,

Breathe out slowly.

Ready?

Breathe in.

And breathe out slow.

Okay,

Now we're going to do a little experiment today.

Instead of doing it with our hands or our bodies,

We're going to do it with our minds.

You ready?

Awesome.

So with your eyes closed,

I want you to imagine a jar.

A jar that you can hold in your hands.

Imagine this jar.

Maybe it's a glass jar or plastic jar.

What does this jar feel like if it was in your hands?

Okay,

Now with your mind,

With your eyes closed,

I want you to picture yourself pouring water into this jar.

Okay,

Now you see the jar full with water,

Right?

Now with your eyes still closed,

I want you to imagine pouring glitter into the jar of water.

Go ahead and shake some glitter in there.

Watch as the glitter goes through the water,

Sinks to the bottom.

No peeking.

Eyes closed.

Okay,

Now I want you to use your imagination again.

Screw a lid on the jar.

Screw it tight.

Tighter.

Awesome job.

Okay,

Now in your mind,

With your eyes closed,

Imagine yourself picking up the jar and shaking it.

Shake that jar.

Shake it,

Shake it,

Shake it,

Shake it,

Shake it.

Shake it up and down,

Left and right,

All around.

Awesome.

Okay,

Now look at the jar.

You see all the glitter in the jar,

Right?

It's going all over the place.

There's glitter,

It's a storm inside the jar of glitter.

Just look at this jar and watch the glitter float around.

Now,

As you watch the glitter,

You might see that it's starting to sink to the bottom.

All the glitter is just settling at the bottom of the jar,

Right?

Okay,

Now I want you to pick up the jar again with your mind.

With your eyes closed,

Pick up the jar again and shake it again.

Shake it,

Shake it,

Shake it,

Shake it,

Shake it.

Give it a really good shake this time.

Shake it as hard as you can in your mind.

Set the jar down again and watch the glitter.

You see how the glitter just settles to the bottom once it's done shaking?

There was a storm of glitter.

Then once it's sitting still,

All the glitter just kind of sinks to the bottom.

Our minds can be like this jar.

Some days,

Our minds move really fast.

We're thinking all kinds of things all the time.

Sometimes that can make us feel worried or angry.

But just like the jar,

If we take a few moments just to sit,

Take a few breaths,

We can let the glitter settle.

Glitter is like our thoughts.

Sometimes there's a lot of thoughts going on,

And it can seem like a storm in the mind.

But just a few minutes of sitting with our eyes closed and breathing,

The thoughts start to settle so that we don't have to feel angry.

We don't have to feel sad.

We don't have to feel anxious or overwhelmed.

If we just give ourselves a few minutes to sit and be still,

We can let the glitter settle.

So remember this next time.

If you feel like there's too much glitter in your head shaking around,

Take a few minutes and just sit with your eyes closed and breathe.

Let's do that right now again.

Let's take some more deep breaths.

Ready?

Awesome.

Ready?

And breathe out.

That feels good.

Let's do another.

Breathe in.

And breathe out.

One more time.

Breathe in.

Deep.

And breathe out.

It kind of feels like it's settling right now,

Huh?

I want you to remember this next time you feel overwhelmed.

And always,

Always take a few moments in stillness and let the glitter of your mind settle.

Thank you so much for doing this today with me.

You did an awesome job.

Have an amazing day,

You beautiful soul.

I'll talk to you later.

Bye bye.

Very nice analogy to help kids think about using the breath to settle the mind.

Great. Recording level low - not easy to hear even on top volume.
