If I had one week left to live,
Or one day,
I would probably seek pleasure.
And I guess you too.
But because nobody knows when the last day will come,
We must find something much deeper than that.
Happiness.
So what is happiness?
Well,
Let me tell you first what happiness is not.
It is not a prolonged state of pleasure.
Pleasure comes from the outside,
It is triggered by things or activities,
While happiness is an internal experience,
A beautiful feeling that comes from within.
So when you focus on pleasure,
You are pursuing things or activities.
Pleasure is experienced through our senses,
And we feel pleasure because of the release of dopamine in our brain.
But guess what?
Dopamine is really addictive.
And once it fades away,
We find ourselves feeling miserable.
So the more pleasure we seek,
The more unhappy we become,
Because it's never enough,
We always crave for more.
Our society pushes us relentlessly to add more and more pleasure to our lives.
We've been conditioned to believe that success is all about accumulating more pleasure,
And thus we keep chasing it.
And that is why there are so many successful,
Unhappy people.
We've become a culture of pleasure seekers,
Hooked on dopamine hits.
We lost the ability to differentiate between happiness and pleasure.
If you had to define happiness without mentioning pleasure,
What would that definition look like to you?
Think about that for a second.
When you focus on happiness,
You pursue an inner state,
A feeling,
And you get that through meaningful connections,
Gratitude,
Growth,
Contribution,
And mindfulness.
So what can you do today to create more happiness in your life?
Remember that contrarily to pleasure,
Happiness is a longer process.
It's so much more fulfilling.
But yeah,
It takes time.
Happiness doesn't mean to have a great day every single day.
No,
Happiness means to really experience the full spectrum of human emotion and being left with an inner sensation of calm,
Of peace,
Of contentment.
