Hi everyone,

Thank you for joining us for our story time tonight.

Our story is called Snow Day Magic.

So first we're going to get all snuggled into our beds and get ready to listen to the story.

Pull your blankets up tight,

Relax your bodies,

And you're gonna lay your two hands down by your side and imagine a box in each hand.

As you relax your body you're going to think about your day to day and anything that made you feel a little bit upset,

Made you want to cry,

Hurt your feelings.

Go ahead and take those thoughts out of your mind and put them inside that box and close that box up real tight.

When you're all done I want you to lift your hand a little bit and give it a little push towards the ceiling.

You're gonna watch that box float up out of your hand and go higher and higher up through the ceiling and it will disappear.

You don't have to give any more energy to those thoughts,

They're all gone.

Now in your other hand I want you to think back on anything that made you smile today,

Made you feel loved,

Made you feel happy,

Made you laugh,

And take all those thoughts out of your mind and put them in the other box.

I want you to think of a safe place where that box can go.

In your dresser somewhere,

In your closet,

Under your bed,

Anywhere that's just for you because you want to go back and be able to think about those memories again.

So put all those thoughts in the box and close that box up and close your hand over that box and give it a little squeeze.

It'll be gone and that box will go wherever you imagined it should go.

Nice and safe.

Okay so now our mind is clear and we're ready to listen to our story.

So get all settled in.

It was early in the morning and Jack and Allie were anxiously waiting in front of the TV to see if their school would be listed as closed due to heavy snowfall.

Snow days were the best,

Especially on days like today.

Outside they could see the snow covering the ground on top of the cars and weighing down the tree branches but it was a bright clear day so it was nice and sunny out but it was still freezing.

Yes,

There it is!

Our school's closed today!

Jack yelled out as everyone watched their school name scroll across the bottom of the screen.

Where's my snow boots?

Said Allie as she headed toward the mudroom.

Hold on,

Hold on,

Laughed their mom.

Let's have some breakfast and maybe change out of our PJs first.

The kids ran upstairs and changed their clothes and scarfed down the eggs and pancakes that mom had set out on the table.

After breakfast was cleaned up and their teeth were brushed,

They got the okay for mom to start bundling up.

This was probably the last big snow of the season and they definitely were not gonna let it go to waste.

Luckily there's a large hill at the edge of their neighborhood that was perfect for sledding.

The family got all bundled up in their snow gear,

Grabbed their sleds and headed out the door.

When they arrived at the hill they were already quite a few families taking their turns down the hill.

There was a group of grown-ups standing around with coffee mugs in their hands talking to each other as they watched their kids soar down the snowy hill.

Mom walked over to join them as Jack and Allie positioned their sleds for takeoff.

As soon as they found a good path that was clear of other kids,

They jumped on their sleds and launched.

The cold wind in their face,

All the other kids whizzing by in the uncontrollable speed was the best feeling of fun and nerves all mixed together.

Eventually the hill leveled out as they reached the bottom and the sleds came to a slow glide.

Jack locked eyes with his sister and flashed a big smile as they came to a stop.

Then they each quickly struggled to get back on their feet with their heavy snow gear on and run back up the hill for another turn.

This went on for most of the morning up the hill and down the hill,

Each trip delivering a thrill of speed and excitement.

After a while the kids took a break from the sledding to play in the snow and started rolling up the makings of a snowman.

With the bottom part of the snowman's body done,

They started pushing around the second to create his belly when Jack declared they needed to find some sticks for his arms.

There was a wooded area very close to where the snowman was standing so they yelled over to their mom that they were going to explore and find a few sticks for their snowman.

She was in a conversation with the neighbor from across the street but stopped to reply,

Okay not too far and with that the kids took off into the trees.

As they walked into the woods the sun started to fade with the tree branches towering high around them.

Both kids started to explore the ground and looking for any good branches that could make arms.

Allie looked up to see a beam of sunlight coming through the trees to highlight a small clearing.

The untouched snow gave off a particularly bright sparkle that made Allie squint her eyes.

She called over to Jack and they walked together to go check it out.

The trees formed almost a perfect circle around the area and the kids ran directly to the center of it and plopped down to soak up the sun.

They waved their arms and legs up and down making snow angels and feeling the warm sun on their face.

All right Allie let's find some sticks and get back before mom comes looking for us,

Jack said to his sister.

Just one more minute this snow is so fluffy said Allie.

Just then they heard their mom yell over in their direction kids yeah mom over here.

Jack yelled back and got up to run through the trees to wave at her.

We haven't found any good sticks yet.

She waved back and went back to her conversation with the neighbor.

Jack started back to Allie and when he got to the clearing he felt a thud on his shoulder and a splash of cold to his face.

Gotcha yelled Allie as she reached down to form another snowball in her mittens.

Oh I'm gonna get you for that you turkey.

Jack laughed as he quickly launched a snowball at his sister.

He watched as it soared through the air and landed right on Allie's back.

His laugh suddenly stopped when in a flash his sister had disappeared out of thin air.

Panicked he started running over in the direction where Allie was standing.

Allie,

Allie where'd you go?

Come on is this some kind of a joke?

Jack stopped in his tracks and listened.

Jack couldn't believe his own eyes when an actual turkey stepped out from behind a nearby bush.

He had never seen one in real life before.

The turkey paced around the snow back and forth and after a minute or so went by,

Poof,

Allie was now standing where the turkey stood with a look of total shock on her face.

What just happened?

Allie asked as she patted herself making sure that she was a hundred percent back to normal again.

I have no idea said Jack.

I hit you with a snowball and all of a sudden you were gone.

Then a turkey was here and then you came back.

Wait were you the turkey?

Did I turn you into a turkey?

I think so.

The last thing I remember was you throwing a snowball at me and then I wound up over here.

Oh my gosh yelled Jack.

I called you a turkey when I threw the snowball at you.

I'm so sorry I promise I didn't mean to turn you into turkey on purpose.

I was just having fun.

The kids stood for a moment in silence their minds trying to understand what had just happened.

Then Allie said what if it was the snowball?

What if the snow is magic snow of some kind?

Let me try it said Allie as she leaned down to gather some snow in her hands.

Oh no you aren't hitting me with that.

What if I don't change back or you turn me into a fancy doll or something Jack said.

Okay well maybe it works on other things that we can try first.

Let's try it on that bush over there.

They walked together.

Allie was snowball in hand.

Okay ready?

Jack nodded.

Football!

Allie said as she threw the snowball into the branches.

Poof!

The kids were thrilled to see a brand new football at their feet.

Jack launched to pick up the football and started tossing it in the air.

Allie ran out a ways and they threw the ball back and forth for what seemed like just a few minutes and then poof it was gone.

They looked over to where the bush originally was and it was right back in its place.

Holy cow said the kids this is definitely magic snow.

Allie paused for a moment and then a small smile came across her face.

Quickly she reached down and gathered a snowball as fast as she could.

Jack knew he better start running.

Puppy!

Allie yelled as she threw the snowball at her brother.

Poof!

A sweet little golden puffball of a puppy came running toward Allie.

She let out a squeal as she kneeled down to play.

Jack you are so cute as a puppy!

Allie laughed.

After a few minutes Jack was back to his normal self.

Allie you didn't even give me a warning now my mouth tastes like dog breath.

He crinkled up his face and stuck his tongue out.

Sorry but I had to try laughed Allie.

Yeah well I'll get you back Jack said as he scooped up a pile of snow.

Hamburger!

He yelled as he pegged Allie with a snowball.

Jack was shocked to see that Allie had indeed turned into a hamburger but she still had her legs.

Jack buckled back with laughter at the hilarious sight.

Allie you look delicious let me have a bite!

Jack laughed as he chased his sister around the clearing pretending to take bites in the air.

When she turned back to normal again the battle was on.

Both kids grabbing at snow and firing off whatever they could think of as they aimed at their sibling.

Teddy bear!

Waffle!

Ankylosaurus!

Unicorn!

Another puppy!

Jack stopped for a moment and then ran to Allie.

Wait I have an idea and his face got very serious.

He leaned down formed a snowball and held it out to Allie.

I want you to throw this at me and when you do yell out spider-man.

Good idea okay are you ready?

Kids!

They heard their mom call out.

Time to go!

Allie dropped a snowball and moved fast.

They didn't want their magical place to be discovered.

Oh they moaned as they ran out of the trees but we haven't found our snowman arms yet.

You can start a new one in the backyard said mom.

Everyone is heading home for lunch and I have some work to do.

They were pretty cold and felt a little rumble in their bellies.

Okay the kids groaned.

Hey after you build a snowman in the backyard how about I make you both some yummy hot chocolate?

Yay okay okay let's go!

The kids ran off to grab their sleds and head home.

They gave a look back and hoped they would get another chance to play in the magic snow.

The next morning they woke up and looked out the window.

The snow was no longer light and puffy but wet and crunchy snow.

The kids looked at each other and exchanged a quick disappointed look.

There wouldn't be anyone on the sliding hill today and chances were pretty good the magic snow was already gone.

But on the positive side it had been a really long winter and the kids couldn't help but feel a little excited knowing spring was on its way in.

Besides they both knew exactly where they would be headed on the first snowfall next year.

And that is the end of our story tonight.

I hope you get a good night's sleep,

Have happy dreams,

And wake up ready for a brand new day tomorrow.

Good night!
