G'day and welcome to today's meditation,
The Sleep Reset.
My name is Dylan and I'll be guiding you through the next 20 minutes of your meditation practice.
When you are ready,
And when you are feeling able to do so,
I encourage you to find a position that feels genuinely comfortable.
And when you feel as if you are ready,
I invite you to close down your eyes and take a big deep breath in through the nose and an expansive exhale out through the mouth.
There's nothing that you need to do right now,
Nowhere to be,
Nothing to solve and nothing to figure out.
For the next 20 minutes,
The only thing that's asked of you is to simply be here and to notice the way that you're currently breathing.
You don't have to change it or control it,
Just simply let your attention rest gently on the natural rhythm of your breath as it moves in and out,
In and out.
And if your mind is still busy,
That's completely fine,
Minds do that.
You don't have to stop thinking,
But perhaps for the next 20 minutes,
You can just let the thoughts pass like clouds moving through the wind,
Open sky.
And when you find your mind wandering away from my voice,
Simply return to the gentle ease of your breath and out.
As you breathe,
Begin to notice the weight of your body,
The surface beneath you,
Whether that be a mattress,
A pillow,
A blanket,
Just let yourself be held by whatever is beneath you.
You don't have to hold on anymore,
Let gravity do the work.
And with each exhale,
You might begin to notice yourself sinking just a little,
A little deeper,
A little more supported,
As that sense of quiet,
Calm and relaxation begins to wash over you.
I'm going to invite you now to take a slow,
Deep breath in,
Filling your lungs completely,
And then letting it out fully,
As a long sigh.
As you exhale,
Imagine any remaining tension in your body simply flowing out with the breath,
Like sand through open fingers.
It may be comforting to imagine a warm,
Soft light beginning to form at the top of your head,
A gentle golden warmth,
Not hot,
Just pleasantly,
Deeply warm.
And as you breathe,
That gentle warmth begins to move downwards,
Slowly,
Spreading across your scalp,
Softening the muscles around your forehead,
Letting your brow release and smooth out.
Any tension that was there is dissolving now,
Simply melting away.
It may be nice to imagine that warmth drifting slowly down your eyes,
Your cheeks,
Your jaw,
And you might notice your jaw loosening just a little,
Perhaps your teeth gently parting,
The muscles of your face becoming soft and still.
It might be nice to imagine that warmth continuing down through the muscles around your neck,
Your shoulders,
And with each breath,
Your shoulders drop a little further,
Simply letting go of whatever you've been carrying today.
Maybe you've been carrying a lot,
And right now,
Just for this moment,
Let's give yourself permission to surrender it for tomorrow.
Before we go any deeper,
I would like to offer you something useful.
Somewhere in your mind right now,
There may be thoughts about the day that have just passed,
Things that have happened,
Things that may have been said,
And perhaps things that are still unresolved.
And if that's true for you,
That's not a problem.
That's just a mind doing what the mind does.
But here's something worth knowing.
There is a part of your mind,
A very wise and capable part that knows how to hold things safely,
So that you don't have to.
Imagine for a moment that somewhere inside you,
There is a room,
A quiet room with solid walls and a heavy door.
And in that room,
There are drawers,
Sturdy,
Reliable drawers,
Each one labelled perfectly.
And anything from today,
That does not need to be solved tonight,
Can go into one of these drawers just for now.
It isn't lost,
It isn't forgotten.
It's simply set aside,
Filed away,
In its place,
Until tomorrow,
When your mind is reset and sharp and ready to do something useful with it.
You might take a moment now,
To place anything that has been looping in your mind,
Gently and softly,
Placing those thoughts into one of those drawers.
And when you're ready,
You can close those drawers,
Gently close the door and know everything is safe in its place,
And your mind can be free.
Now let's bring your attention fully into the body,
Starting at the very top of your head and moving slowly,
Gently,
All the way down,
Your scalp,
Letting it soften,
Any tightness simply releasing,
Your forehead smooth,
At rest,
The tiny muscles around your eyes releasing,
Your eyelids heavy and still,
Your cheeks,
Your nose,
The muscles around your mouth,
All simply releasing,
All softening,
All quiet now,
Your jaw loosening just a little more,
Your neck,
The long muscles either side of your spine,
Releasing their hold,
Letting the weight of your head softly sink into the pillow or whatever is supporting you,
Your shoulders melting down,
No longer braced for anything,
Releasing any tension from your upper arm,
All the way through to your elbow,
Forearms,
Each muscle softly releasing any tension,
Like a wave of ease moving down through your limbs,
Your wrists,
Your hands,
Your fingers,
All the way to the very tips,
You may begin to notice a pleasant heaviness beginning to form,
A deep comfortable heaviness that tells your body it is safe,
Maybe you bring your attention to your chest and notice your breath rising and falling naturally,
Without any effort,
With each inhale,
Bringing a sense of calm,
And each exhale,
Carrying away any remaining tension,
Your chest,
Your ribcage,
Expanding softly and releasing,
All the way down to the belly,
And with each breath,
Your belly softens,
Rises and falls,
With each and every inhale and exhale,
Your lower back,
The muscles of your spine softening,
Releasing,
Easing into the surface beneath you,
Your hips are heavy and still,
Your thighs,
The large muscles of your legs,
Softening and releasing,
As if they have been finally given permission to rest,
All the way down to your knees,
Your calves,
Your ankles,
All the way down to your feet,
All the way to the tips of your toes,
Releasing,
Softening,
Relaxing,
Calming,
As you take your next inhale,
You begin to notice your entire body,
Deeply comfortably heavy,
As you exhale,
You notice that sense of calm growing deeper,
Every part of you,
Exactly where it needs to be,
As you rest here now,
I want to speak to the deeper part of you,
Not the thinking mind,
But the part that runs quietly underneath,
That part that learn to walk,
To breathe,
To dream,
The part of your mind that already knows how to get a deep relaxing sleep,
Your body has slept thousands of times before tonight,
And each time,
It knew exactly what to do,
Without you having to manage it,
Without you having to figure anything out,
Sleep isn't something we do,
It's something we allow,
And tonight,
I'd like you to grant yourself that permission for a deep relaxing and calm sleep.
You might find that somewhere in the quiet of this moment,
A shift is beginning to take place,
Not a dramatic shift,
But a subtle,
Natural setting.
Perhaps your nervous system is releasing its watchfulness,
Because there's nothing to watch for tonight,
You are safe,
You are held and the part of you that sometimes worries about sleep,
Might begin to notice that the worry itself is simply a signal,
A signal that you care about how to feel,
And you can thank that part of you.
And,
You can let it rest now too,
Because tonight,
Deep sleep is already on its way,
Not because you are making it,
But because you are no longer standing in its way.
Imagine yourself,
Some hours from now,
Waking gently,
Feeling the kind of rest that settles into your bones,
A quiet,
Deep satisfaction.
The sense of having truly slept,
Your mind refreshed and clear,
With your body fully restored.
As you move through tomorrow,
You might notice something different,
A steadiness,
A ease,
A sense that you have access to a version of yourself that is rested and resourceful.
And fully present,
This version of you already exists,
And tonight,
You are moving toward it.
So now,
There is nothing left to do,
Just this breath,
And this one,
And this one.
Your body knows the way,
And you can simply let go,
And drift,
Drift down into the quiet,
Into the warm,
Still darkness.
Into rest,
And finally,
Gently,
Calmly,
Into sleep.
Before we go any deeper.
