Welcome to Release the Day,
A 10-minute meditation for therapists,
By Chris McDonald,
Licensed Therapist.
Welcome.
You've spent so much of your day being present for others,
Listening,
Supporting,
Holding space,
Sitting with pain.
Uncertainty.
Anxiety.
So many stories that aren't always easy to hear.
Now this time is for you.
A chance to gently transition out of your role as a therapist.
And back into yourself.
Find a comfortable position.
Allow your body to settle.
Close your eyes if that feels comfortable.
I invite you to take a slow breath in through the nose,
Breathing in through the nose.
And then breathing out.
Inhale.
And explainer.
Remind yourself there's nothing you need to solve right now.
No client you need to figure out.
No note you need to write?
No problem you need to carry into this moment.
For these next few minutes,
You can simply be.
Bring your attention to your body.
Notice your feet.
Feel the connection to the earth.
Supporting you.
Holding you up.
Notice your legs.
Your hips.
Your shoulders,
Maybe give a quick shoulder roll if that feels good.
Your jaw.
Notice where you may be holding the day.
You don't have to force the attention away.
Simply acknowledge it.
Baby,
Say to yourself.
I've been holding a lot today.
And then say,
I can begin to let some of it go.
Breathe that in.
As you breathe out,
Imagine releasing the emotional weight of the day.
Breathing in.
Breathing out,
Releasing the emotional weight of the day.
Not because you don't care.
Not because the work doesn't matter.
But because you're a human being who needs space to restore.
Bring to mind the clients you've seen today.
You don't have to dig deep or revisit their stories.
You don't have to analyze the sessions.
Simply acknowledge each person.
That you saw today.
And how you showed up.
Perhaps you did exactly what was needed for them.
Or maybe you wish you said or did something different.
Maybe there was a session that felt unfinished.
Or you may be wondering.
Did I do enough?
Am I enough?
If any of these thoughts arise.
Remind yourself.
I am not responsible for controlling another person's healing.
I am not responsible.
For controlling another person's healing.
I am responsible for showing up with care.
Presence and integrity.
I am responsible for showing up.
With care.
Presence and integrity.
Allow those words to sink in.
Really embody that message.
Take another breath in.
And breathing in,
A nice long exhale.
Now imagine creating a gentle boundary between your workday and the rest of your life.
You might picture closing a door,
Turning off a light.
Leaving your office.
Or simply imagining the workday.
Becoming smaller.
And smaller.
And farther away.
Remembering you can honor the work.
Without carrying it with you.
Make this intention.
The Workday.
Has ended.
My role as therapist can pause.
I can return to myself.
I can return to myself.
Notice what happens in your body as you hear those words.
Maybe you sink a little more into the chair.
Or your shoulders soften.
Maybe there's more ease in your breath.
Whatever you notice is okay.
There's no right way to feel at the end of a therapy day.
And bring one hand to heart.
Offer yourself the same compassion.
That you so freely offer your clients.
That compassion could be.
I did what I could today.
I don't have to be perfect.
I am allowed to rest.
I am allowed.
To have a life beyond my work.
I challenge you to think of one thing from today.
That you would like to leave behind.
Maybe it's self-doubt.
A difficult conversation.
Client's overwhelming pain.
The feeling that you didn't accomplish enough or do enough.
Maybe it's the pressure to do more.
You don't have to push that away.
Simply imagine.
Setting it down.
Like putting a box down on the floor.
You can return to it tomorrow.
If it still needs your attention.
But for now.
.
.
Step away.
And let it go.
Now bring to mind one thing you want to carry forward from today.
Perhaps it's a moment of connection.
A client's courage.
Maybe a client made some progress.
Or simply the knowledge that you showed up for your work.
You did the best that you could today.
Let that be.
What you carry with you.
Allow that to close out your day.
I invite you to take three slow breaths.
With the first breath.
Invite ease.
Breathe in ease.
Filling you up from head to toe.
And breathing out.
With a second breath.
Invite self-compassion.
Breathing in self-compassion.
And breathing in.
And the third breath.
Invite permission to rest.
Breathing in,
Permission to rest.
Everything out,
Right?
Allowing the exhale.
To be long and extinct.
You have spent the day.
Caring for others.
Now you get to care for yourself.
You don't have to earn rest.
You are allowed to put your work down.
As we close,
Gently open your eyes if they are closed.
Feel the support beneath you.
Notice the space around you.
Bring your awareness to the room.
Notice what you see in your space.
Move your fingers,
Your toes.
And remember to take this transition with you.
Leave what belongs to the workday there.
Let it go.
Give yourself permission.
To come home to your own life.
You've done enough for today.
Remember to listen to this meditation at the end of each workday.
To help ease the transition.
From professional life.
Personally.
Thank you for joining me today.
