Here's a quick way to understand what meditation is.
And the effect that it can have on your mind.
So consider your mind as like a glass of water.
And the water is full of stuff.
Sand,
Debris,
Mud,
And that stuff is whatever your mind is full of.
So it could be worries,
It could be rumination,
It could be judgments,
Could be plans,
It could be fantasy,
Maybe some combination of all of this.
That stuff is swirled up in the water and it's quite cloudy.
The practice of meditation is simply holding the glass still.
Maybe you focus on the breath.
Or you focus on a mantra,
Something that's here in the present moment that you can focus on.
And that is you simply holding the glass still.
And the more you hold the glass still,
The more you'll allow that stuff,
That swirling in the glass,
To gradually make its way.
Down to the bottom.
The challenge is you can't make it go any faster than it will on its own.
Any effort to try to make it go faster will,
Of course,
Only swirl the water up more.
So you just hold it still.
And you keep holding it still.
And then gradually.
You reveal.
Clear water.
Clear water of mind.
