What does it mean to treat rest as a spiritual practice? In a world that celebrates constant doing, many of us spend our days immersed in yang energy — active, outward, productive, and driven. Yogic and Taoist teachings remind us that true wellbeing comes through balancing yang with yin: the restorative energy of stillness, reflection, and deep rest. In this short talk, I explore why practices such as Yoga Nidra and Yin Yoga can help restore that balance, supporting both the nervous system and the spirit. Rest is not laziness. It is a return to balance. A return to ourselves.

So what is rest as a spiritual practice?

We live in a world that glorifies doing.

Moving,

Achieving,

Producing,

Multitasking.

A relentless yang energy that our modern lives reward and our nervous systems quietly pay for.

In yogic and Taoist understanding,

All of life moves between two forces,

Yin and yang.

Yang is active,

Outward,

Expansive.

Yin is receptive,

Inward,

Restorative.

And we need both in balance to feel whole.

Every night when we fall asleep,

The body naturally slips into a deep state of yin.

And you know what happens when you don't get enough sleep.

One night and you're a little foggy.

Two nights and you are irritable.

Three nights,

You barely know what your name is anymore.

And that's not weakness.

That's your yin and yang falling out of balance.

But here's what most people don't realize.

We naturally operate a little more yang just by being awake.

And then we layer on top of that screens,

Stimulation,

Constant demands on our attention.

And we wonder why we feel depleted in a way that sleep alone just doesn't fit.

So rest of the spiritual practice is a conscious choice to bring yin energy into our waking hours.

Practices like Yoga Nidra,

Yin Yoga,

That simulate the deep restorative state of sleep while awareness remains present.

You're not escaping life.

You're restoring the balance that makes life sustainable.

And this is what makes rest sacred.

It's not laziness or indulgence.

It's a return to balance.

And return to yourself.

And this is the heart of what I explore in my Wisdom of Rest three-day course that's now available on Insight Timer.
