I learned this exercise as part of my education in the Indian Vocal style Dhrupad. For my students, I transformed it a little bit yet kept the essential practice. It is also part of my course The Medicine of Your Voice. This exercise connects us to our body and to the sound of our voice through humming which creates a relaxed feeling in body and heart. When practiced regularly we will start sensing liberation and a widening of perception of ourselves and life.

Let's find a comfortable position within settling into the body squeezing and relaxing the pelvic floor muscle connecting to our inner anatomy,

The sacred anatomy,

Connecting to the ground below us,

Rooting and sending our awareness from the pelvis up through the second chakra,

Third chakra,

Being aware of the diaphragm,

Up into the fourth chakra,

Heart chakra,

Fifth chakra,

Back of the neck and the throat,

Sixth chakra,

The pineal gland with its projection in the third eye and the seventh chakra reaching out with our branches into the universe.

We are connecting to our breath and we are getting ready for the pineal gland meditation,

The beautiful warm up involving the muscle of our tongue,

Tongue muscle,

So important.

So again let's just tune into our sacred anatomy,

Inner anatomy,

Chakra system,

Gentle alignment up into the sky and down into the earth and we are letting our awareness rest on our breath.

We're going to use our tongue,

There are three positions to place the tongue while we are doing this sound exercise to activate our pineal gland,

To cleanse our pineal gland or to just be aware of that area in our head.

The first position the tongue is relaxing gently behind the teeth,

Normal position,

You want to make sure that you have a gentle smile on your face throughout all the three positions of the tongue,

Second position you're going to put the tip of your tongue up at the middle of your palate in your mouth,

The mouth palate,

Again a gentle smile on your face,

Relaxed face and the third position the tongue is gently curled up into the back of your mouth.

So the tip of your tongue is touching the upper part of your mouth palate where it becomes soft and there again you want to have a gentle smile on your face.

You will notice that within each position something is changing in your muscle structure of your face.

Also if you're focusing on your breath while you're just trying out these different positions you might sense some light in your forehead if you can send the awareness into your sixth chakra into the pineal gland that is quite naturally to happen.

So we're going to hum three times into each position and once we arrive at the third position in the back we're just going to have a short meditation of one or two minutes.

I encourage you to really stay connected the whole time to the ground pelvic floor muscle and just make that a common sense being connected that way to yourself.

And after our short meditation we're going to move all the way back three times coming into the third position,

Second position and first position.

Later on this exercise you can do up to five rounds and you can also switch the pitch of your humming depending on what your body likes in that moment.

So the humming we are using right now is just an example you can lower your humming sound you can pitch it up every day might be different as well.

So let's begin place your tongue gently behind your teeth,

Foreteeth or lower teeth depending what's natural in the moment.

Coming to the breath and whenever we are ready begin breathing in.

One.

Second position mmm mmm mmm and third position mmm mmm mmm mmm relax your tongue we have a short meditation mmm and then we are going to go all the way from the back to the front three times each position curling up in the back we begin mmm mmm mmm second position mmm mmm mmm and first position mmm mmm mmm mmm relax your tongue,

Relax your mouth now you can repeat a couple of rounds up to five rounds also notice please what is happening in your body the humming sound is very cleansing,

Clearing to your lungs as you might have heard I have changed the pitch of my humming here and there depending to what I felt the humming can do to my body also notice what is happening around your head if you perceive some lights behind your eyes and your forehead some warmth maybe in the back of your brain and make notes how you're feeling
