Here you are,

Landing for these few moments,

Going in to your sweet center.

Inhale.

Exhale.

Welcome to a hit of hope.

There was a day this past week when I was that weird combination of restless and dull,

Edgy and exhausted.

I flitted from thing to thing,

Unable to settle.

It was a rare time when I didn't have to do anything.

I could honestly choose what I would fill my time with.

Inhale.

Exhale.

I could go for a walk,

Even though I had already taken one.

I could go to the thrift store,

Even though I'd been to one three days earlier.

I could watch mindless TV and go numb.

The more I thought about these options,

The more they felt as if they would make my energy even more restless and dull,

Not less.

Inhale.

Exhale.

I decided to grab a notebook and walk three blocks to a chapel filled with gentle light and comforting silence.

As I walked along the sidewalk to get there,

My head was down and still buzzing with energy.

That's when I heard a literal buzzing by my right shoulder.

In my town,

Huge flower baskets hang from the light posts,

And one of them had just been graced with a hummingbird.

I stopped.

I couldn't remember the last time I'd seen a hummingbird.

And that made me sad.

It also made me pay attention.

I watched the bird thread its needle beak into a magenta flower and drink deeply.

Inhale.

Exhale.

When I researched what a hummingbird can mean,

I discovered that they create energy between heaven and earth.

With their wings,

They feast upon the rooted that have reached all the way into blossoming.

They also have a voracious appetite for nectar.

That sweet thing held inside something that is blooming.

Something that takes work together and to convert into something that nourishes.

Inhale.

Exhale.

Hummingbirds move forward and backward and even upside down with ease,

Seeking that which brings life and joy.

They hover,

Dwell,

And hold in this now.

Shining like a jewel,

Catching the light.

Inhale.

Exhale.

The hummingbird felt like a lesson of what it might be like to live in a world that is a wide open field of possibility.

Hummingbirds also teach it's okay to flit,

To wander,

To live a life that seeks that which is sweet and beautiful.

And when we do that,

We are sure to delight those who are near.

Inhale.

Exhale.

Consider living like the hummingbird.

Shining and seeing the world as all kinds of sweet possibilities.

And our daily task is to live light and shine.
