Meditation doesn't have to be perfect. It just has to be practiced. This gentle meditation guides you through a mantra for whenever practice feels difficult or off-track: Simply. Begin. Again. These three words invite you to release judgment, shake off frustration, and reconnect with your practice without the pressure of getting it "right." Whether your mind wanders, your posture shifts, or you lose focus entirely, you have permission to start over as many times as you need. This practice addresses perfectionism, meditation anxiety, and the self-criticism that keeps us from showing up for ourselves. Use it whenever you feel discouraged about your practice, or as a foundational meditation that reframes what "good" practice actually means. Afterward, you may feel more compassionate toward yourself, empowered by possibility, and ready to practice without the weight of expectation. Hi there,

Welcome back to Insight Timer.

I'm Stephen,

Your guide for this meditation.

Sometimes meditation can feel difficult.

People often tell me they can't meditate.

We might label ourselves as bad at meditation when we sit down to start and a thought arises.

Suddenly I have failed to meditate because I can't stop thinking.

There's a mantra I like to explore when a practice of any kind seems to go off track.

It's three words.

Simply.

Begin.

Again.

Now,

It may not feel so simple,

But with this word we invite levity and lightness.

We allow ourselves to shrug and shake off any sense of judgment.

What does it mean to start over?

Frustration may arise.

Acknowledge it and invite simplicity.

What does it mean to begin?

It might be an inhale.

It might be adjusting the posture.

It might be adjusting the mind.

Beginning means initiating,

Shifting,

Or stepping into a mode.

Beginning meditation again might mean re-initiating the mind or body experience of meditation,

Or of whatever you practice.

Again,

The re-suffix.

Reconnect with your form of meditation.

It might be the breath.

It might be a word.

It might be a sensory awareness.

If your eyes were closed and they opened,

Beginning again might mean consciously choosing to let the eyelids reset,

Refill,

Refresh,

Restart.

These three words,

Simply begin again,

Can also be the practice itself.

Practice beginning again by noticing when your meditation has drifted and inviting yourself back.

I'd love to encourage you to practice with the aim of practicing,

Forgoing the idea that practice makes perfect.

Instead,

Let practice make space for more practice.

And let today's practice be simply beginning again.

Shall we try it?

Choose how you want to begin.

Maybe it's a posture,

A breath,

A phrase.

Once you've begun practicing,

Notice whatever you need to notice.

At any point,

If you have the sense that you might have strayed from your practice,

Welcome yourself back.

Simply begin again.

Practicing be the practice.

An invitation,

If it helps you,

Simply begin again.

I want to thank you for practicing with me.

Whether you're beginning meditation for the first time,

Or for the 900th time,

May we feel empowered by the idea that there are unlimited possibilities to begin again.

Come back again soon to simply begin with the Insight Timer community.
