Hi there and welcome back to Insight Timer.
I'm Stephen and I'll be your guide for this meditation.
You've chosen to listen to this practice because you want to celebrate a birthday.
Perhaps it's yours or perhaps you're holding space for someone else's celebration today.
Birthdays are often occasions for presents,
For gifts that can be wrapped,
Held,
Measured,
And exchanged.
But by choosing to meditate,
You're inherently choosing to gift yourself with presents.
You are choosing the gift of being.
Whether you're in a room full of people,
Or practicing in a quiet space alone,
I invite you to take this presence,
Your very being,
And prepare to unwrap it.
Settle into a posture that feels celebratory in its own way.
You might be upright,
Open,
Relaxed.
And the state of your presence right now might have some layers.
Think of your current mood,
Your thoughts,
Your physical sensations as the packaging.
Some of us arrive wrapped with a bow,
Bright,
Colorful paper,
Feeling the peak of the celebration.
Others might feel tucked inside a heavy box or a plain paper bag.
You might notice where the packaging,
The wrapping,
Was done in a stressful way.
Or perhaps you feel a bit fragile.
Now,
Take a minute to notice your wrapping.
What does your presence feel like today?
Is it tight?
Is it loose?
Does it come with complicated instructions?
Or is it simple?
And begin to breathe into these layers.
With every inhale,
Imagine you're gently loosening the ribbon.
With every exhale,
You're peeling back the paper.
And it's important to remember that no packaging,
Thoughts,
Anxieties,
External labels,
Influence the value of the gift inside.
The box is not the treasure.
How your presence is packaged,
We set aside.
As you peel back the layers of doing,
What is left is the being.
Can you hear your breath as the soft rustle of the unwrapping?
Can you feel the space you're creating inside yourself?
And as you feel the space,
The presence,
Your breath,
Consider how do you value the gift of your presence?
We get many signals of worth and validation,
Especially on our birthdays,
From others.
Cards,
Calls,
Tributes,
Gifts.
Right now,
In this space,
Can you value your company,
Your presence,
As worth?
Can you look at your own heartbeat,
Your own breath,
Your own awareness?
And say,
This is enough.
This is the prize.
In each breath you take,
You're receiving the gift of life all over again.
Take one more deep,
Full breath,
Feeling the gift of your lungs expanding and contracting.
And as you move on with celebrating this birth,
Whether it's yours or someone else's,
Try to stay unwrapped.
Stay open to the present moment as the greatest present you could ever receive.
You are the gift.
Your presence is the celebration.
Happy birthday,
And thank you for practicing with me.
