Today we are going to use this opportunity to send loving kindness to our children.

So let's first get present in this moment sitting up nice and tall,

Placing our hands on our knees or in our lap,

And starting to breathe long deep breaths in and out of our nose signaling to ourselves that this is the perfect time to let go of anything no longer serving you,

Anything on your to-do list,

And to simply be in this present moment connecting with your body,

Your mind,

And your spirit.

Allow these nice long deep breaths to be cleansing nourishing breaths.

With each one allow yourself to sink deeper into this moment,

Deeper into your body,

And deeper into your heart.

You can now let your breath return to its natural rhythm simply moving in and out all on its own.

Let's take a moment to be sure your body is nice and relaxed.

As I mentioned a part of your body you can rest your attention there and focus on relaxing that part of you.

Starting with your face paying special attention to your forehead,

Your cheeks,

And your jaw.

As you exhale feeling your shoulders fall away from your ears and really letting them drop,

Allowing your arms to hang heavy and your fingertips to relax in your lap.

Allow your chest to be filled with a sense of peace and your belly is nice and soft and filled with a sense of ease.

Your hips sink into the cushion or the chair supporting you and your right leg relaxes from hip to toe and then the left.

We will use this opportunity to send love and compassion to either all of our children at once or you can focus on one child if you feel that your relationship needs a little extra tender loving care.

Imagine your child or children smiling and happy doing something that they enjoy.

Notice that spark in their eye,

That smile on their face.

Maybe they are running in a park or swimming in the summertime or snuggled up in your bed.

Maybe they're playing a game with you or reading a book or cooking with you.

Really see them in your mind's eye.

Notice their eyes,

Their smile,

Notice their hair,

Notice their clothes.

We're going to wish them love and kindness with a set of phrases.

I will tell you a phrase and you will silently repeat it in your head and imagine your child or your children receiving it from you.

The first one is may you be happy.

May you be happy.

May you be healthy.

May you be healthy.

May you be healthy.

May you know peace.

May you know peace.

May you be safe.

May you be safe.

May you be safe.

May you feel loved.

May you feel loved.

May you feel loved.

Notice if any sensations arise in your body,

Your heart,

In your belly when you offer these phrases of love and kindness to your child or your children.

How does it feel for you?

And now I invite you to imagine your children or your child in a situation that feels difficult.

Difficult as a parent.

Maybe they're having a temper tantrum or they're talking back.

Something that is difficult to manage.

Notice how easily we label this as upsetting or bad behavior.

And see what comes up in your body when you think about this situation.

How does it feel different?

In your mind's eye,

Imagine your children or your child in this situation.

And we're going to send them the same phrases of love and kindness even in this difficult situation.

May you be happy.

May you be happy.

May you be happy.

Imagine your children or your child receiving this love even in the midst of this trying situation.

May you be healthy.

May you be healthy.

May you be healthy.

May you know peace.

May you know peace.

May you know peace.

May you be safe.

May you be safe.

May you be safe.

May you feel loved.

May you feel loved.

May you feel loved.

And notice how your body feels now in this moment after you've offered love and kindness to your children in this difficult situation in your mind.

Offering our children love and kindness is something we can do every day with a hug,

With a smile,

And with our thoughts like this.

Great shifts occur for ourselves and our children when we offer this love and kindness.

I invite you now to take a few more nice long deep breaths.

And when you feel complete,

You can slowly open your eyes.

Oh, man, that was exactly what I needed! My daughter is lovingly referred to as Captain Chaos, the Beautiful Disaster, and she has been testing my patience hardcore with distance learning. Today is a new day, and a new chance to react differently when she throws a fit.

Thank you for this. I’m in a difficult custody situation and am not physically with my sons. It helps my heart to be able to send them love and peace. 🙏🏻I hope they feel it.

This might just be the thing that saves me in the middle of a hysterical fit of my son, for the upteenth time per day. Thank you!

I have to admit, I didn’t do this under the best of circumstances - there were lots of distracting noises here at home - and yet I still felt that shift. Really powerful. Thank you!

This was great. I'm struggling with my thoughts and reactions to my children's challenging behaviours. I will be returning to this often.
