If you are feeling a little sad, lonely, or disconnected from yourself or your friends and family, this sweet breath and movement technique may help you feel a little more loved. You'll open your arms wide with your inhale and then wrap yourself in a gentle hug on your exhale. This simple, soothing practice will help you reconnect with your heart and invite in a sense of warmth and belonging as you remind yourself of all the love that surrounds you. This track is suitable for children as well as adults, and using easy and gentle movement as well as breath can make it accessible for anyone who struggles to focus on their breath only. The more often you do this type of simple self-compassion practice, you may find that your feelings of ease and contentment grow. Thank you to Alex Dallas for the music.

Transcript

This breathing technique is all about showing yourself some love and remembering all the people in your life who love you too.

Science has revealed that doing this can help us feel happier,

Less anxious and more motivated.

So let's give it a go together.

You'll start by sitting up tall,

Lifting your chin and spreading your arms wide as you breathe in through your nose.

As you breathe out through your nose or your mouth,

Hug your arms around yourself,

Drop your chin to your chest and maybe close your eyes.

Do this a few times,

Stretching your arms out wide and breathing in and then hugging them around yourself,

Breathing out.

As you breathe in,

Think of all the people who love and support you in your life.

Imagine you're gathering all of their love in your arms.

As you breathe out and hug yourself,

You're bringing all of that love back into your body.

As you stretch your arms out wide,

You might feel your shoulder blades squeezing closer together and your chest opening.

As you close your arms around your body,

Feel your back and the back of your neck stretch.

Feel your hands on your body.

Keep going with breathing and moving like this for a few more breaths.

Remember,

You always have your breath with you and you can always come back to it,

Whatever else you are experiencing.
