Destroying The Fetters, That Which Tie Down The Mind

The “sanyojana” or “fetters” are defilements that bind the hearts of sentient beings, drowning them in the endless cycles of birth and death. There are ten fetters, and when the first three are broken, eventually the remaining seven will be destroyed, within 7 lifetimes at most. So we must put forth effort. The mind is the knowing element. Still ignorant of the truth, when sense impressions arise, the mind is deluded. Thus, we must train ourselves in mindfulness. We examine ourselves — is our virtue unblemished? Is our samadhi firm? When our samadhi is firm, we begin to see clearly and some doubts are removed. We see our minds and the sense impressions as separate. We see thoughts as proliferations of the mind, sankharas, and that we are not our thoughts. We see thoughts as mere conventions — there is no proliferation — but there is knowing. This is Vipassana arising. The first three fetters are destroyed…
