Welcome to this five-day course,
Breathe 2B.
With me Abigail Poulton here exclusively on Insight Timer.
Over the next five days,
We're going to digest 10 minute sessions each day to support you in understanding your breath and how you can utilize it as a tool to deeper presence,
To deeper beingness,
Because after all,
We are human beings,
Not human doings.
So for today,
I want to simply bring your awareness into your natural breath.
Feel free to close down the eyes.
Place the hands somewhere of rest.
And go ahead,
Just clear the breath,
Inhale fully through the nose.
Open the mouth and just let it wash away.
Close the lips,
Inhale fully.
Open the mouth,
Let it go.
Last one just like that,
Inhale.
Open mouth to release it,
Wash it all away.
Gently seal the lips when you feel complete with the exhale and then simply allow the breath to travel in and out through the nostrils.
Nasal breathing.
When we nasal breathe we support ourself meeting greater oxygen exchange in an optimal way.
It has been discovered also that if we breathe through the nose,
We're supporting ourselves getting 20% more oxygen into the lungs.
So feel free for the rest of our practice to allow the breath to journey in and out through the nostrils.
Like two streams of ever flowing water,
Like two river bends in and out of the nostrils.
Notice the quality of the breath that you have.
Where do you sense it?
Is it in the chest?
Is it in the belly?
Is it in the ribcage?
And noticing if it's shallow or deep,
Quick or slurred.
Over the next few moments shared.
What would happen if you gently allowed the breath?
To take up more residence.
In your marvelous body.
We have been gifted the breath today.
Not everyone has been so lucky here on planet Earth.
So let's honor,
Let's respect the gift that we have with each and every breath in this practice.
Our life sustainer.
Our bridge to the outer world,
Connecting to the inner world of your own body.
Taking the outer in and the inner out is pure magic.
Softening the shoulders a little bit more.
Relaxing the jaw,
Smoothing out the forehead.
Allow the ribs for the next few breaths to inflate 360 with the inhale.
And deflate 360.
With the exhale.
Just stay with that simple idea of ribs expanding with the inhale.
And ribs gently contracting with the exhale.
Each deep breath we take is a love note to your deepest sense of self,
To your nervous system.
Telling you that you are safe.
You are loved.
Allow the breath over the next few moments to be an active nourishment.
And I want you to start to sip up the breath as if it were the most glorious drink.
And then take a few moments at the top of your breath just to savour,
So just pause,
Savour,
Absorb it,
Just like your cells are absorbing the nutrients.
And then on the exhale through the nose it's like this sweet release and you relish it.
So you inhale to invigorate,
To sip it up.
You suspend to savour.
And you exhale to relish the sweet release.
Stay with this for a few more minutes.
Are you able to stay within the awareness of your breath or is your mind racing?
See if you can take it deeper breath to bring you back into presence.
Because when you're fully wrapped,
Immersed in the natural breath that you're having or shaped.
You can't be in the future,
You can't be in the past because we can only breathe this moment.
Can only feel the breath in every unfolding unfurling moment experience.
So today is all about general awareness of the breath.
And general opening to the inhale.
And releasing,
Relishing the release with the exhale.
This is something you can practice outside of our time together today,
Throughout the remainder of your day or evening,
Just catching yourself in a moment and going,
Oh where do I feel my breath?
And then becoming aware of the behavior of the breath and then allowing the ribs to open a little more with the inhale.
Allowing the ribs to gently contract a little more with the exhale.
And nasal breathing.
Especially important when you're sleeping.
So if you are someone that likes to explore wellness tools or looking for better sleep hygiene or deeper rest,
I do encourage you to explore having mouth takes.
Gently sealing the lips and allowing the breath only to travel through the nose is a beautiful way to support your nervous system when you sleep.
For the remainder of our time together on this course,
We're going to be getting deeper into some really beneficial,
Supportive,
Nourishing breathing techniques that have been in my back pocket and provided so much presence,
Connection and joy and safety when necessary when I needed it over the past few years.
So I'm really looking forward to sharing those tools and techniques with you until Until then,
Just keep coming back into that general field of awareness when it comes to your breath.
Notice how you're breathing,
Notice any habitual patterns.
Is it up in the shoulders?
Do your shoulders lift when you take a deep breath?
See if you can soften the shoulders and rest into an expansive breath over the next day between our meditations.
Have a stunning evening or a stunning day ahead and I look forward to breathing and being again tomorrow.
