The life you want begins with the self trying to create it.
Hey there,
Friend.
Thanks for hitting play today.
My name is Anthony,
And this is part one of a body of work that I'm releasing slowly here on Inside Timer called Return to Self.
It comes from my weekly live sessions I lead here on Inside Timer of the same name.
I like to think of that weekly live series as an identity-shifting journey for those of us who want to manifest a new life,
A new path,
A new opportunity without losing ourselves in self-improvement,
Spiritual performance,
Or the pressure to become someone else.
And in my first return to self live session,
I open this session by asking people how they typically try to manifest something in their lives.
And the first answers were the typical things.
Visualization,
Prayer,
Law of attraction,
Trying to access the subconscious and shift limiting beliefs.
These are the places many of us begin.
We want something to change in our lives,
So we look for that method that will help us bring it into form.
And there's nothing wrong with that.
Prayer can definitely open something in us.
Visualization can clarify something.
Affirmations can remind you of who you want to be.
Even the law of attraction.
As limited as I think it can be sometimes as a tool for transformation.
It often gives people their real first language for the idea that life is not happening to them.
That they have conscious creative control over their experience.
But as that live session went on,
The conversation moved somewhere more honest and deeper.
People really weren't trying to manifest things.
They were trying to understand why something in them kept returning to old patterns.
They were trying to figure out why they could want a new life,
Feel a real desire for something more aligned.
And still feel stuck despite what they tried and how good their life looked on paper.
This is where traditional manifestation shows its flaws.
Because at some point,
The question is no longer,
What technique should I use?
It is no longer only,
How do I get this thing,
Or how do I make this outcome arrive?
The deeper question becomes,
Who am I being while I try to create it?
That is the question so much personal development advice skips.
It tells you to visualize harder.
Be more disciplined.
Clear your energetic blocks.
Hustle harder.
But it does not always ask you to look at the self who is doing all that carrying on.
And that self matters.
Because if the self trying to create the new life is still focused around the old one,
Life has a way of finding its way back to the same familiar pattern.
Because whether you realize it or not,
Your identity runs your life.
It dictates what feels possible,
What feels safe,
What you choose,
What you avoid,
What you tolerate,
And what you allow yourself to receive.
So this is where this work begins.
Before you chase the outcome,
You must look at the self trying to create it.
Because what happens is we often hyper-focus on our goals,
The outcomes.
Goals are useful.
Goals are important.
As humans,
We need a target to hit.
It's just how our brains are wired.
They set direction for our lives and help us define the things we are wanting to call into our lives.
But a goal by itself usually comes from the mind.
And the mind is often influenced by comparison,
Urgency,
Fear,
Old conditioning,
Or some idea of what life is supposed to look like.
But the deeper layer beneath goals is your identity.
So your goal may be to create a business,
Become more confident,
Find love,
Make more money,
Or build a life that feels true.
But underneath that goal is a real person.
Who is trying to live it.
And that person already has a set way of thinking,
Feeling,
Responding,
Hesitating.
Choosing,
And most importantly,
Protecting themselves,
Which points to something really important.
In every moment,
You are manifesting a self.
You are not only manifesting when you sit down to visualize or pray,
You are manifesting as you listen to my words right now,
In the way you answer an email.
Avoid a tough conversation.
Postpone something that truly gives you energy and lights you up.
You're manifesting when you tolerate something that drains you because it has become normal.
That is a rehearsed identity at work.
And for most of our lives,
Our nervous system has practiced that particular version of ourselves.
It's practiced an emotional baseline,
Familiar thoughts,
Certain reactions,
And a sense of what is safe.
So when you try to introduce something outside your familiar self,
Like a new aspiration,
It can feel like a hard cell to your body.
You may want confidence,
But your body has practiced shrinking.
You may want a freer,
More aligned life,
But your body has practiced survival.
You may want abundance,
But your body has practiced lack.
This is why manifestation and success can not only be about wanting the desire badly enough.
Yes,
Desire matters.
But desire does not automatically change the version of yourself that has been trained to return to old patterns and states of being.
This is where identity shifting comes in.
So the essence of manifestation lies in moving beyond the goal itself and embracing the corresponding identity.
But let's be clear,
Not by asking you to dislike who you are or throw yourself away,
But by asking you to notice the self-concept already creating your current life.
So you can begin to practice the identity that matches the life you say you want.
And one of the simplest ways you can start applying identity shifting in your life is to the underlying identity underneath your goals.
And what I mean by that is that if your goal is to become more confident,
The deeper question is,
What is the identity of a person who exhibits confidence?
How do they think?
How do they sit in a room?
How do they speak on a normal Thursday at work?
How do they respond when they're questioned or misunderstood?
That is different from trying to manifest confidence as a personality trait.
If your goal is to start a business,
The deeper identity might be,
I am someone who thinks,
Feels,
And acts like a person in business.
That doesn't mean you go and quit your job tomorrow and pretend to be someone you are not.
It means you begin asking what that kind of person does in their ordinary life.
How do they spend their time?
What skills do they learn?
What do they create?
What decisions would they make today?
And one of the most classic examples of all,
Of turning a goal into an identity is if your goal is to write a book.
The identity then is simply,
I am a writer.
And what does a writer do?
A writer writes.
That difference sounds small,
But it changes the whole way you relate to your goals.
I need to write a book feels heavy.
But I am a writer,
And today I write one page gives your identity something to practice.
And this can apply to whatever your goal is.
So instead of thinking in terms of goals and focusing on the end result,
I encourage you.
To begin by breaking everything down in your life through the lens of identity.
So let's try that right now with a quick four-question practice.
So take a deep breath.
Your body settles for just a minute.
No need to go into a full meditation.
You can just ground into the moment.
Feel your body being here.
And begin first by identifying what is the one thing you want right now.
Just pick one.
What is your most important goal right now?
Call it to mind.
When you have it,
Now ask yourself honestly,
Who am I currently being while I chase that desire?
In other words,
What is your current identity around that goal?
If you look honestly.
You might see there's a possible mismatch.
No judgment here.
You're just kind of investigating.
I like to think of this as a goals to identity audit.
Now ask yourself,
What identity already has what I want?
So if that goal you desire was already accomplished.
If you already achieved the outcome.
What type of person would you be?
The first answer that comes to mind is usually the one to lean into.
What type of person would you be?
And lastly,
Question number four.
What is one tiny action that you can take daily that reinforces that identity?
Nothing big or glamorous.
Actually,
The tinier,
The better.
Because you're not trying to become someone overnight.
You're defining and committing to one real identity.
And you make that commitment by taking one small aligned action.
Every day.
So just to recap the four questions,
If you want to go back and explore this further.
What is the one thing you want right now?
Meaning,
What is the most important goal in your life?
Question number two,
Who am I currently being?
While I chase that desire.
Question number three.
What identity already has what I want?
And question number four,
What is one tiny action I can take daily that reinforces that identity?
Because the truth is,
Friends,
The life we desire does not really begin when our goals all get accomplished and when the outcome finally arrives.
Because there will always be another goal to chase.
There will always be another outcome to manifest.
But the life you want perhaps begins the first moment you stop waiting for the outcome to show up and start practicing the self who could live it now.
Today.
You're my only question for you.
What are you waiting for?
