Hello and welcome.
This is the last pause of the day.
You have nothing left to do or where left to be.
This time is only for us.
Let yourself lie down if you haven't already.
Let your body be fully held by the surface beneath you.
Close your eyes.
Take a breath in and let it go.
Another breath in and release any tension as you exhale.
Bring to mind a shoreline on a still Scottish night.
The sea is calm,
Long slow waves rolling in from the dark water,
Breaking softly on pale sand.
The moon is out,
Casting a silver path across the water.
The air smells of salt and cold and something ancient.
You are here alone and it is peaceful.
The kind of quiet that only the sea at night can hold.
From the old stories of the Scottish islands and tales told through long winters,
There are the Selkies.
Creatures who spend their days in the sea as seals.
Who can come ashore at night to shed their skins and rest in human form.
At the end of each day,
They lay down what they have been and simply rest in what they are.
Tonight,
You are invited to do the same.
Think of all the roles you have worn today.
Perhaps you were a worker,
A volunteer,
A parent,
A partner,
A friend,
A child.
Perhaps you were patient.
Or perhaps you were tired and short and more human than you would have liked.
Perhaps you were capable and purposeful.
Perhaps you were uncertain.
All of these are skins you wore today and they served you,
But you do not need to sleep in them.
With each breath out,
Begin to let them go.
Gently,
One by one,
Or all at once,
However feels natural.
Breathe in and breathe out,
Letting a roll soften and fall away.
Breathe in and breathe out,
Letting another layer release.
Breathe in and breathe out,
Softer now,
Lighter.
What remains when the skins are shed is not emptiness,
It's you,
Just you.
Beneath everything you did and said and carried today,
Quiet and whole and needing nothing.
The waves continue their slow,
Soft rhythm on the shore.
Breathe in and breathe out,
Let your breath find that rhythm if it wishes.
The moon moves slowly across the water,
The night holds everything gently.
You are safe,
You are done.
You can rest now,
Let sleep come in its own time,
Like the tide,
Unhurried and inevitable.
Thank you for sharing this practice with me.
Sweet dreams.
