Welcome,
I'm really glad you're here and that you're moving.
Because movement helps us gently shift stress and deal with difficult emotions.
So whatever the day has looked like so far,
Thank yourself for choosing this.
These sessions are intentionally designed without music and instead feature soft nature sounds in the background.
However,
If you are in nature and have headphones that allow some of the sounds around you into your awareness,
I encourage you to enjoy them whilst listening to this.
Maybe you are already walking.
If not,
Go ahead and take some steps.
Keep walking at your natural pace.
No need to slow down or straighten up or do anything differently.
Just walk.
And as you do,
Bring the lightest bit of attention to your feet.
To the simple repeating fact of ground,
Foot,
Ground,
Foot.
That's where we're starting today.
Take a breath in and out.
Let your shoulders soften just a fraction.
Here's something I notice with a lot of the people I work with.
They're exhausted from the neck up.
Screens,
Decisions,
Mental loops that won't switch off.
Most of modern life happens in the mind and the body just gets dragged along behind.
To balance that out,
Today we're going to come down into the body,
Into the feet,
Into the completely undeniable reality of each step.
Feel your feet touching the ground right now.
One step after the other.
And take a moment to realize that unlike most of the intangible thoughts that are occupying your mind every day,
The ground underneath you is steady,
Reliable.
Bring your attention to your right heel as it makes contact with the ground.
Feel the weight of your body arriving into that one point,
Solidly,
Fully.
There's something almost unexpectedly reassuring about it if you let yourself actually feel it rather than just think about it.
Now follow the movement from heel to the arch to the ball of your foot.
And then push off your toes as they leave the ground and reach forward again.
That entire sequence happens thousands of times a day without a single conscious thought from you.
Your body has known how to do this since you were a toddler.
Now do the same on the left side.
Noticing the heel strike and then the gentle roll forwards to the toes,
Which then push off.
What surface are you walking on right now?
Is it hard or soft,
Flat or uneven?
Is it concrete,
Tarmac,
Grass,
Gravel,
Earth?
Begin to notice how your foot and ankle make tiny adjustments with every step.
Even inside your shoes.
Responding,
Balancing.
There is constant adaptation happening below your ankle.
Most of us just never slow down enough to notice it.
Now let your awareness travel upwards,
Just slightly,
To the ankles,
The calves,
The knees.
Feel the gentle flex and release with each step.
Notice the ease with which this happens.
Your body is doing precisely what it was designed to do.
And when we pay attention to these small adjustments and movements,
Something in the mental noise tends to quieten.
Move a little higher still.
Feel your hips shift and sway with each stride.
Subtle,
Rhythmic,
Almost like a slow pendulum.
Your arms swinging,
Your breath moving.
Notice that your body is operating in a kind of quiet,
Ongoing coordination.
There's no external factor running the show.
It's simply happening.
You are,
In the most literal sense,
In flow.
I'd like to invite you to slow your pace just slightly now.
Not dramatically,
Just a degree.
Enough to feel each step a little more deliberately.
Enough to feel the ground receive your weight before you lift away from it.
Every single step,
The ground is there.
It doesn't give way,
It holds you,
And your body if you let it.
And your body,
If you let it,
Can actually register that feeling of being supported,
Of being held.
In the moments when everything feels uncertain or spinning,
This simple steadiness can bring relief.
Just keep walking for the next couple of minutes.
You may notice that by now your thoughts have slowed down.
When we bring awareness into the body,
Into the physical sensation,
Into movement,
The mental chatter simply has less room to run.
The body is,
By its nature,
Present.
It can only ever exist in this moment right now.
And when we mentally join it there,
We get to be here too,
Fully,
Without having to try.
For these last moments in the practice,
Just feel your feet.
Left,
Right,
Left,
Right.
No commentary needed.
No getting it right or trying harder.
Just this simplest,
Most grounding thing you can do.
Gently let your awareness widen back out.
Feel the whole of your body walking.
The air around you.
The sounds of where you are.
You've just spent real time truly in your body.
For a lot of us,
The body is the very last place we think to look when we need steadiness.
We tend to look outside of ourselves for hold.
But you have everything you need to ground and steady yourself already within you.
For the rest of your walk,
There's nothing you need to maintain.
But if at any point your thoughts start to spiral or your chest feels tight,
Find your feet.
Left,
Right,
Ground.
That anchor is always available to you.
Anywhere,
At any time.
Walk well and maybe I will see you back here tomorrow.
