This grounding meditation practice is to help develop a place you can go to feel safe and calm when feeling stress or anxiety.
If you could be anywhere in the world right now,
Real or imagined,
Where would you go to feel relaxed and peaceful?
Take a moment.
There are no wrong answers.
Once you have a place in mind,
Close your eyes,
Take a deep breath,
And start to explore.
Imagine yourself in this place.
What do you see?
Are you by yourself?
Are you with others?
What time of day is it?
Is this place boundless or is it contained?
What colors do you notice?
Is there a lot of light or an absence of light?
How does the light present reflect off of the landscape or the different objects in the space?
Now notice what you hear.
Are there loud noises,
Soft and soothing noises,
Or mostly silence?
Are there any conversations around you?
If you're outside,
Do you notice any sounds of nature,
Like wind or birds chirping?
Can you hear your breath?
See if you can observe its pace.
Without judgment,
Just notice.
Next,
What do you smell?
Are there any particular aromas?
Perhaps fresh,
Salty air,
Your favorite meal?
What do you taste?
Are you eating or drinking anything?
Finally,
What do you touch?
Maybe you're petting an animal,
A pet,
Or holding a partner's hand.
Are you still and quiet or active?
If you're sitting,
Notice what sensations you're feeling against your back.
Or if you're standing,
Perhaps the texture of the ground against your feet.
Internally,
Start to notice what is happening in this place.
What body sensations are you feeling now?
Do you feel warm or cold?
Maybe you notice less tension in your body.
Maybe your body's more in rhythm.
What feelings or emotions are present?
What thoughts are coming up for you?
See if you can identify a positive statement that can represent this place.
Maybe something like,
I can be calm.
Repeat this like a mantra until you feel peaceful and relaxed.
Say at least three times your phrase,
I can be calm.
I can be calm.
I can be calm.
Know you can always return to this place whenever you need to access the sense of calm.
