Welcome to this meditation.
Move to the balcony for sleep.
A mindfulness meditation using an observation technique.
Observation helps you fall asleep by shifting your brain from a state of active,
Problem-solving thought to a state of relaxed,
Detached awareness.
This process short-circuits the bedtime anxiety loop.
By focusing on the physical sensation of breathing or the objective observation of passing thoughts,
You engage the brain's default mode network differently,
Stopping it from repetitive thinking.
Treating your thoughts like clouds passing in the sky prevents you from engaging with or reacting to anxious thoughts.
This meditation has no wake-up signal at the end.
So if need be,
Set an alarm to gently wake yourself up at a later time.
Let's begin.
Settle into a comfortable position.
Lying down in your bed?
Or on a couch.
Or someplace where you plan to fall asleep.
Allow your body to rest fully into the surface beneath you.
And when you're ready,
Gently close your eyes.
Take a slow,
Easy breath in.
And a gentle exhale out.
Breathing in.
And breathing out.
There's nothing you need to do right now.
Know where to go,
Just arrive here in this moment.
Begin by noticing your body.
Not trying to change it.
Just noticing.
Feel the weight of your head supported.
Your shoulders softening.
Your arms resting.
Draw legs heavy and still.
Let gravity do the work for you.
If there's tension anywhere,
You don't need to fix it.
Just observe it.
Like you might notice a cloud passing through the sky.
Take another slow breath in.
And a longer exhale out.
And with each exhale,
Imagine your body settling a little deeper.
Like sinking gently into a soft mattress.
You feel supported.
Safe.
And held.
Tonight we're going to practice something simple.
And powerful.
Observation.
Imagine your mind as a house.
Inside this house are rooms filled with thoughts,
Feelings,
Memories,
And sensations.
Often,
We find ourselves inside those rooms.
Caught up in the noise,
The activity.
And the emotion.
But tonight,
You don't need to stay inside.
Tonight,
You're going to step out.
And move to the balcony.
In your mind's eye.
Imagine a quiet,
Peaceful balcony.
Just outside the rooms of your thoughts.
It might overlook a calm landscape.
Or a quiet city at night.
Or a vast open sky under the stars.
There's a gentle breeze.
The air feels soft and cool.
This balcony is a place of perspective.
A place of calm observation.
Now imagine yourself stepping out onto this balcony.
You are no longer inside the rooms of your thoughts.
You're simply watching them from a distance.
From the balcony,
You may begin to notice thoughts drifting by.
Perhaps they look like clouds.
Or leaves floating on water.
Or soft lights moving in the distance.
You don't need to follow them.
You don't need to analyze them.
And you don't need to push them away.
Just watch.
A thought appears.
You notice it.
And then you let it pass.
If a thought pulls you in.
If you find yourself back inside the room,
That's OK.
Gently.
Kindly guide yourself back out.
Back out to the balcony.
No judgment.
Just returning.
Now notice if there are any feelings present.
Maybe there's a trace of stress.
Or a little bit of worry.
Or perhaps a sense of calm.
Whatever is here.
Allow it.
From the balcony,
You can observe emotions without being overwhelmed by them.
You might say quietly to yourself,
Oh,
There's worry.
Or,
Oh,
There's tension.
Just some emotions passing through.
Like weather moving across the sky.
You are the observer.
Study.
Quiet.
I'm moved.
Bring your awareness gently back to your body.
Notice any sensations.
Warmth.
Coolness.
Heaviness,
Like this.
If there's discomfort,
Observe it with curiosity.
Where is it?
What does it feel like?
Does it shift or change?
There's no need to resist it.
From the balcony,
Even physical sensations can be witnessed.
Without tension.
Or without reaction.
And sometimes,
Simply being observed,
The body begins to soften all on its own.
Now gently bring your attention to your breath.
Breathing in.
And breathing out.
Not trying to control it.
Just noticing.
The rise of your chest.
The fall of your belly.
Each inhale arrives on its own.
Each exhale releases naturally.
If your mind drifts,
The breath is always here.
A steady rhythm.
A quiet anchor.
From the balcony,
You watch the breath come and go.
And go.
Like waves on a shore.
You you Notice if there's any part of you trying to control this experience.
Trying to do it right.
Or trying to fall asleep.
Gently let that effort soften.
Sleep doesn't come from trying.
It comes from allowing.
From the balcony.
There's nothing to manage.
Thoughts can come Feelings can come.
Sensations can come.
And all of them can go.
You remain.
As the quiet observer.
Now imagine the space of the balcony expanding.
Wider.
More open.
More peaceful.
There's more room for everything to simply be.
Thoughts become smaller.
Quieter.
And more distant.
And the mind begins to settle.
Like a lake growing still at night.
As your body continues to relax,
You may begin to feel a gentle heaviness.
Your mind doesn't need to stay alert.
Even the observer can soften.
You can rest on the balcony in this calm,
Open space.
Thoughts may begin to blur.
Images may fade.
Awareness may drift.
And that's perfectly okay.
There's no need to hold on to anything.
Take one more slow,
Gentle breath in.
And exhale completely.
Feel your body fully supported.
Your mind at ease.
Your awareness quiet and spacious.
You've stepped out of the noise and into a place of calm observation.
And from here,
Sleep can come naturally.
If you're still awake,
Simply remain on the balcony.
Watching.
Resting.
A labyrinth.
And if sleep begins to take you,
Let it.
You are safe.
You are at rest.
You are simply observing.
And gently drifting into sleep.
