You've been born with a natural given intuition of what is right and wrong.
It is your intuition that makes you understand what is good or bad for the world around you and also for yourself.
Deep down,
Your instincts know best.
This birth-given gift combined with your life experience gives you an underestimated decision-making tool that can guide you on the right path and increase your chances of happiness.
But how can you trust your instincts?
So today we are looking at instincts and common sense.
You will learn to identify whether or not you are in a balanced state where your instincts serve you.
By raising this awareness,
You will start to trust yourself and your intuitions.
Your goal is also to learn how common sense is deeply ingrained inside of you and you will come to understand that your natural state of being is healthy,
Happy and instinctual.
Agatha Christie said,
Instinct is a marvelous thing,
It can neither be explained nor ignored.
So let me try and explain it to you.
On a daily basis,
Your decision-making is influenced by a whole lot of things like friends,
Media,
Family,
Laws,
Strangers and so on.
For a large part,
That is great.
You most likely don't get robbed on a daily basis,
So having laws is good.
You will almost most likely benefit from the advice given by your family,
That is also great.
But let us look a bit deeper into why your underlying instincts are the best decision-making tools and how you can improve their usage.
So the biggest reason why your instinct is the best decision-making tool is that it is independent.
Other decision-making tools from outside factors are not.
They are created with certain objectives in mind and they often make you less instinctual,
Less independent and less driven by common sense.
Think about it for a minute.
At what point did shops decide to write,
This is hot on a coffee cup?
Because if you need to read this is hot before you taste your coffee,
Then you have given up on your instincts and your common sense.
And living life like that is a recipe for disaster.
It is a recipe for disaster because you become dependent on external factors to navigate your life.
This limits you,
Takes away your freedom and thus diminishes your ability to develop and grow.
Let us look at an example.
It is proven that people who wear bike helmets have more accidents than people who don't wear a helmet.
Why is that?
The biggest reason for that is that you get fooled into believing that you do not need your instincts and common sense anymore,
That they are unnecessary.
Now I am not saying you should not wear a helmet when biking,
But what I am saying is that when you wear the helmet,
Don't let it make you believe that you can switch off your instincts and common sense.
It is not only dangerous,
It also makes you dependent in the long run.
Next,
Let us look at how you know that you are in a healthy state and that you can trust your instincts.
Decisions from instincts are healthy and aligned when you are balanced.
When your body and mind are imbalanced,
Your instincts will still exist,
But some of them will be unhealthy.
For example,
When your instinct is to eat a lot of sugar,
Then most likely you are out of balance and when you are generally balanced,
You will not crave sugar and you will usually only be hungry for the food your body really needs.
Let us look at it in a bit more detail.
Now the only real measure of when you know that you can trust your instinct is your self-judgment.
And your self-judgment should come from facts.
How healthy is your body at the moment?
How well do you digest food?
Are you in a good mood overall?
Is it easy for you to start the day?
Do you have more positive experiences than negative experiences in life?
Accepting all of these answers will make you able to judge your current state of mind correctly and will let you make an accurate decision on whether or not to trust your instincts.
Here,
Note that of course you should allow yourself to be guided by professional people,
Especially when it comes to health and especially when you are not in complete balance yet.
Still,
The ultimate goal is to trust your instincts.
And for many of us,
Trusting instincts is not natural yet because our daily decision making is based on outside guidance.
But does that serve you and does it make you the happiest version you can be?
Instincts is great,
But it is also limiting.
Even when people have your best interest in mind,
Other people and companies can never know everything about you.
Their views and ideas about you are limited.
That is okay,
They are human and that's the way it is supposed to be.
Also,
Guided decision making is not fundamentally bad.
But others' subjective viewpoints of you are limited.
So let's have a look at how increasing instinctive decision making can help you.
Instinctive decision making will especially serve you when your potential decision is unclear from just looking at the facts.
You don't need instincts to decide whether to eat peanuts when you have a peanut allergy.
The facts will be enough.
But when facts are not enough to make an obvious decision,
Then tap into your instinct.
That is a great first starting point to trust your instincts.
Now let us talk about instincts when it comes to human relations.
There are a lot of studies that show that your subconscious instincts are more accurate than your conscious thoughts when it comes to human relations,
Truth-telling and feelings.
Please look up these studies,
They are fascinating and solid.
But what does that mean for you?
It means that your instinctual feelings about a person are more accurate than your conscious thoughts about a person.
You already know that human interactions are extremely important to your happiness.
So now think about how important your instincts are to make sure you spend time with the right people.
Start trusting your instincts when considering connecting with other people.
It will be worth it.
Your heart knows better than your head when it comes to personal relations.
Trusting yourself to be instinctual also comes by truly accepting the truth of who you are and what you need.
Your instincts,
When in balance,
Will follow your real needs and wants,
Your greater truth.
So accepting the truth of your personality makes it easier to become instinctual.
Next,
Let us talk about common sense.
But before we do so,
Let me explain that with common sense I mean the inherent and deeper knowledge that allows you to make sound,
Practical judgment concerning everyday matters.
Talking about common sense,
I'm not talking about the accumulated decision-making of a group of people or humanity as such.
Remember,
It used to be group common sense that the earth is flat and that the sun rotates around the earth.
I'm not saying common sense that is derived from accumulated decision-making is all bad.
But today I'm talking about your inherent deeper knowledge.
Your inherent common sense will usually do the following things.
It will give you a good sense of what is fair.
It will not let you harm others easily.
It will make you loyal and it will make you respect others.
So how can you harness the power of common sense for your everyday happiness?
The first step is again trusting.
Trust yourself.
Trust your inner voice.
Trust your values.
Trust your common sense.
Most often your common sense is aligned with everyone around you but when it is not,
Trust it even more.
Because only then can you challenge,
Develop and respect yourself.
You only become a truly independent human being when you act according to your common sense,
Even though it is challenged by others.
Next I want to mention that common sense will protect you from people who do not want the best for you.
People who want to manipulate or scam you will usually try and win your trust with dialogue and behavior.
But when communicating with these kinds of people,
There is usually something you feel deep inside.
It is a mix of instinct and common sense that this person is not aligned with you.
You feel that something is off.
When you are in a confident healthy state,
You will be able to act upon that feeling.
This feeling will protect you from being taken advantage of.
If you think you are lacking common sense,
Then you are mistaken.
Inherent common sense is not something you can lack or unlearn,
But it is something you can ignore.
So challenge yourself to tune in and give yourself permission to listen to your inner voice.
As a side note,
A good sign your common sense is trying to guide you in the right direction is when you want to create a solution that is beneficial for everyone,
Not just you.
Another sign that common sense is in play is when you strongly want to make decisions around a person without knowing their needs in all detail.
You just have that feeling that something is right.
So trust your common sense.
It will make you develop your friendships further.
It will also allow you to switch off from all the distractions around you.
You will feel less dependent on external factors to guide your life.
The deeper your connection to your inherent common sense and instinct,
The less you can be manipulated by outside factors.
Now let us look at the practical exercises about instinct and common sense.
First of all,
I would like to invite you to write down three names of people in your life.
Can be anyone,
But at least one of them should be close to you and at least one of them should be not so close to you.
Pause the course now and write down three names that come to mind.
Now I would like you to make two columns.
In one column,
Write down some practical observations about the person.
Does she talk a lot?
Is she quiet?
What does she behave like?
How many facts you can observe?
Then in the second column,
Write down your instinctual feelings towards the person.
How do you feel towards them?
What is your instinct?
Again,
Pause the course now and write down your observations of the three people.
During this week,
I would like you to observe when your actions are driven by instinct,
Common sense or from external manipulation.
In all kinds of different situations,
Become conscious of yourself and please make a calendar entry now for when you will continue this course.
Can be in a couple of days or a week,
But please set a reminder now so that you will stay on your path.
