In our everyday lives the mind often becomes very good at spotting what’s wrong, what’s missing, or what needs fixing. For a few moments, we pause and deliberately notice something that is already here, and recall tangible experiences from our recent past, in an attempt to make the pleasant in our lives just that little bit more sticky. Appreciation in mindfulness is not about forcing positive thinking or ignoring difficulties. Rather, it is about widening the lens of our awareness so that we can include what is supportive and nourishing. Sometimes the smallest things can become surprisingly meaningful when we really allow ourselves to notice them. In this way, appreciation becomes a way of reconnecting with our lives.
