The theme of freshness is something that comes up regularly in our practice,
Quite often drawn to our habits in life more generally,
But also in our mindfulness practice.
So it's important to remind ourselves consistently that every moment we live is unique,
Even though our minds might suggest otherwise.
So recognising the newness of our experience,
We can cultivate a greater sense of appreciation and presence in our daily lives.
For example,
Simply noticing the subtle differences in your breath,
Changes in your surroundings,
Or simply reminding yourself that this moment is unique.
It's never been quite this way before.
These practices can encourage you to break free from those habitual patterns we're all familiar with,
And just create a chance to engage more fully with the present moment and with the now.
This reflective approach not only nurtures self-awareness and mindfulness,
But it also invites us to appreciate life with renewed curiosity and intention.
Socrates said,
The secret of change is to focus all your energy not on fighting the old,
But on building the new.
And Heraclitus said,
You cannot step into the same river twice,
Or fresh waters are ever flowing upon you.
So in this practice,
I'm going to invite you to introduce a greater concept of freshness in whatever way that might be for you.
So perhaps starting by choosing an anchor that's still solid and grounding,
But perhaps is a little bit less familiar to you.
Perhaps deliberately changing your posture,
Maybe stand if you usually sit,
Or perhaps sitting if you usually stand.
And as we go through this practice,
I'll introduce some gentle reminders to invite a sense of freshness and offer the chance to more deeply notice the ever changingness of our experience.
So inviting you now to take a position that feels steady and grounding for you.
Maybe starting just by sensing into the feet.
Noticing the weight of the feet on the floor.
Maybe noticing the full range of sensations,
The feeling of whatever surface is beneath your feet.
Maybe taking a couple of deep breaths,
And just notice what it's like to arrive here,
To arrive here in just this moment.
Maybe just checking in now and noticing what's here for you.
Any thoughts,
Any worries,
Maybe ideas about things you need to do in the future.
Maybe regrets from the past.
Just noticing what's here.
No need to change anything,
You need to adjust.
Just being with whatever's here,
Right now,
In this moment.
Maybe noticing any sensations in the body,
Any parts of the body that are sort of calling to you.
Just experiencing fully,
Just listening to what they have to say.
Nothing you need to change,
Nothing you need to do.
Just becoming aware.
When you're ready now,
Just identifying somewhere in the body that feels steady and grounding.
Somewhere where you feel you could rest your attention for the next few moments.
So it could be the feet,
The seat or the hands,
Maybe the breath.
But if it feels okay for you,
And as part of this theme of freshness,
Maybe just making a decision to choose somewhere less familiar,
Somewhere that you don't use very often,
But perhaps still feels like somewhere you could rest your attention.
And as you do so,
Just noticing all the details,
All the sensations in this chosen anchor point.
Not thinking about sensations,
Just feeling whatever's here,
Whatever's showing up for you.
Extending a feeling of gentle,
Open curiosity to whatever's here in your chosen anchor point.
Knowing that no two moments are ever quite the same.
This breath is different to the last one,
Will be different to the next one.
Sensations will arise,
Do their thing,
And then pass away,
Just as much as you're able to,
Just tuning into this newness,
Letting go of expectations that the future will be like the past,
And as much as you're able to,
Just extending an open acceptance of your experience as it currently is.
And if the mind wanders,
Maybe just smiling at the mind,
And just gently,
Ever so gently,
Just bringing your attention back to your chosen anchor point,
Perhaps taking a deep breath,
And just seeing if it's possible to experience the freshness of this moment.
Just here with this body and this breath,
Just resting your attention in the tangible reality of this moment,
The ever-changing reality of this moment.
And you're already now just moving the attention to take in the entirety of this body,
Tuning into all and any sensations,
From the top of the head down to the tips of the toes.
Again,
Maybe taking a couple of deep breaths,
Just resting in this expanded,
Open field of attention,
Open to everything that's here,
Maybe noticing your posture,
Facial expression,
And as we bring this short practice to an end,
Just inviting you to tune in at intervals during your day to the freshness of this moment.
