Most of us know the story by now: slow nasal breathing, the vagus nerve, the parasympathetic shift. The exhale calms, the diaphragm does its work, and we drop out of fight-or-flight. But this week, I want to complicate that story — in a good way. If slow breathing were only about pace and depth, then breathing slowly through the mouth should work just as well. So does it? A study in Frontiers in Systems Neuroscience put that question to the test with experienced pranayama practitioners — and pointed to something intriguing: the nose may do something extra, feeding a signal to the brain through airflow itself, not just through the rhythm of the breath.
