Welcome to this week's update.
Most of you know the story we've built together.
Slow nasal breathing,
The vagus nerve,
The parasympathetic shift.
You know the exhale is where the calming happens.
You know the diaphragm mechanically stimulates the vagus nerve.
You know that long,
Soft breathing pulls you out of fight or flight.
That's the ground we stand on.
But today,
I want to complicate the story a little,
In a good way.
Because there's a piece of research that made me rethink why nasal breathing does what it does.
Here's the puzzle.
When we talk about breathing in the vagus nerve,
We usually credit the mechanics.
The slow rate,
The deep diaphragm movement,
The long exhale,
And that's real.
But what if that were the whole story?
Then slowing breathing through the mouth at the same pace should give the same result.
Same rate,
Same depth,
Same exhale.
So does it?
A group of researchers decided to actually test this.
They published it in Frontiers in Systems Neuroscience.
They worked with experienced Pranayama practitioners,
People who could breathe at around two to three breaths per minute,
And they set up a beautifully simple comparison.
Slow nasal breathing activates two systems,
The olfactory system by stimulating mechanoreceptors in the nasal passages and the parasympathetic nervous system via The vaguest nerve.
Is what I find fascinating.
When you breathe in through your nose,
The air moving across the tissue,
High in your nasal passages,
Stimulates receptors there.
Mechanical sensors.
They fire with airflow.
That's a whole channel of stimulation the mouth simply doesn't have.
Your mouth can slow you down,
But it can't do that.
Now I want to be honest with you about the science.
That was a small study with highly trained practitioners.
And the cardiorespiratory measures between nose and mouth were actually quite similar.
The researchers themselves were careful.
What they were really doing was opening a question.
That the nose may be doing something extra,
Feeding a signal to the brain through airflow itself,
Not just through the pace of breath.
Whether or not every detail holds up,
I think it points at something we can all feel.
There's a reason breathing through the nose feels different from the mouth,
Even when the rhythm is the same.
It's not only about slowing down,
It's a whole sensory conversation happening every time air moves across those passages.
A conversation your brain is quietly listening to.
So here's what I'd love you to try this week.
In your practice,
Don't just count the breath,
Feel the air.
Feel the cool draw of it at the tip of the inhale,
High in the nose.
Notice the texture of it.
Because that sensation isn't incidental,
It may be part of the signal itself.
You're not just moving air,
You're stimulating a pathway.
Breathe slow,
Breathe soft,
And breathe through the nose.
Not only because it calms the body,
But because the nose might be talking to the brain in a language the mouth never learned.
