Hello again,
Welcome.
My name is Pratika.
This meditation is called Coming Home to Your True Self.
What does it mean to come home to your true self?
We use these words so easily.
Come home to yourself.
But where are you right now if you are not with yourself?
If there is a true self,
Is there also a false self?
And if there is,
Which one have you been identifying as?
It may sound like some New Age mystery,
But is it really such a strange question to ask?
And who is this self you are being asked to come home to or as?
Is it something different?
Something more,
Something deeper than your personality,
Your successes or failures.
Your relationships,
Your hopes and dreams,
Or your inspirations.
Or is there something even more fundamental than everything you have learnt to call yourself?
Perhaps coming home to your true self is not about finding somewhere else to be.
But recognizing perhaps for the first time what has been present throughout your entire life.
Because so much of our life is driven by momentum.
Finding something more,
More to see,
More to achieve.
Or to experience and more to become.
We attempt to satisfy,
To fulfill this sense of more through our achievements,
Through our personal goals,
Through success,
Through relationships.
Through creating a life we imagine will finally bring us the comfort and security that we desire.
And when we achieve something we have worked towards,
There can be a wonderful sense of satisfaction.
I made it.
This is what I wanted.
But how long does that satisfaction truly last?
Achievements can become something of yesterday.
The excitement fades.
New goals appear.
Relationships change.
Then inevitably within this momentum there is something else to accomplish,
Something else to become,
Something else to reach.
And so we invest more time and more effort as the search for true satisfaction continues.
This momentum keeps us moving,
Always looking towards what will hopefully bring fulfilment.
But when we look more closely,
Everything we pursue is changing.
Everything we can point to as my life is continually moving.
Achievements come and go.
Circumstances change.
The body changes.
Thoughts change.
Feelings change and relationships change.
And yet,
Something has been here through all of it.
Something that does not need to achieve anything in order to remain here.
Something that does not need to become anything more in order to feel complete.
Something that does not become more complete when something is gained or less complete when something is lost.
Can you recognise what this may be?
It is not something you have to find.
It is the quiet abiding presence that has never needed the changing circumstances of life to make it whole.
Circumstances change,
Life changes,
You change,
And yet this quiet unmoving presence is the foundation within which all of this changes.
Perhaps we have been looking for so long in the wrong direction.
Or you may have been trying to find our sense of home in the ever-changing circumstances of our outer life.
Through the things that excite us,
To what appeals to us,
And whatever captures our attention.
We've been conditioned to expect the changing dynamics of life to give us something permanent.
But can the changing ever provide a reliable foundation?
Can what become,
What can come and go ever truly be known as home?
What if home and the true self are not something that can be built upon,
Not something to be found,
Achieved or acquired?
What if home is that which does not move when everything else does?
Rest here for a moment without needing to accomplish anything.
Nothing to achieve,
Nothing to prove,
Nothing to become.
Just be here.
Without turning this moment into another step towards something else.
And notice,
There is nothing missing when simply being here.
The mind may still have its desires,
Its plans,
Its next projects.
Let them come and go.
You don't have to follow them to know where home is.
Home is not found in the satisfaction of the next achievement.
It is the unmoving foundation from within which all achievement arises.
It is not waiting at the end of the next goal.
It is not something you will finally arrive at when life becomes what you would hope it would be.
The things you achieve will come and go.
The circumstances of your life will continue to change.
But that which is unmoving,
That which does not need to become anything else,
Is timelessly present.
Perhaps this is what coming home truly means,
No longer looking for permanence in the impermanent Rest here now,
Not with the idea of another achievement,
Not as the next project,
Not as a future destination.
But in what is undeniably present.
Solent.
Unwaveringly complete and whole.
This is home.
