'Be kind to your body and mind' is a calming meditation for kids that allows them to process all the big feelings through bodily awareness and gratitude practice. Full of soothing nature sounds and gentle chord music, this meditation can be used during the day to relax and just before bed to lull the little ones to sleep. Recorded by Alex, a writer and a mum of two energetic toddlers, who is a gentle-parenting advocate and a long-time Japan lover.

Hi.

Welcome to this space,

The bubble of calmness and relaxation.

This is the time to be kind to your body and your mind.

Think for a second that you are bathing in a bubbly bath while listening to soothing music.

Can you lie down and close your eyes?

Make yourself as cozy as possible.

Maybe put your favorite blanket over yourself or hug your favorite plush toy.

Are you there with your eyes closed?

Oh,

That's amazing.

Now imagine butterflies in all sorts of colors.

Some big,

Some small,

Sitting gently on your eyelids.

Don't be scared,

They are very friendly,

Sitting there,

Flattering and touching you softly with their velvety wings.

Let them stay there for a while.

They will make sure that your eyes are closed and you have a beautiful sleepy time.

Time to relax.

Now take a deep breath.

When you breathe deeply,

Your belly should fill with air like a big floaty balloon.

Touch your tummy,

Is it big already?

Then puff all the air out slowly and slowly like a puffer fish would do.

Repeat that long,

Deep breathing.

The air in,

Right into the big balloon.

And out,

So that your tummy is flat again,

Flat like a sweet,

Sugary pancake of a belly.

In and out.

Now move your little fingers as if you were playing an imaginary piano.

All the little tones,

C,

D,

E,

F,

G,

A,

H and C again.

Imagine a bit of wind under your fingers making them move.

And then let them fall flat on the floor or bed.

Do you feel the little sensations in your hands?

Are they cold or warm?

Happy or sad?

Now give yourself a big hug and think that you are hugging a fairy pillow.

Hold it tight and release.

Now wiggle your toes from the little toe to the big toe as if they were little golden fish taken out of the water.

Move your feet a little too.

Think about how amazing they are,

Your feet.

They carry you every day when you move around the world.

Say thank you feet,

Aloud or just in your head.

You must be very grateful that you have them.

Now take your hands and put them on your legs.

Make slow little movements as if you were rolling play-doh.

Roll your pretend play-doh on one thigh,

Then on another.

Let's count the first leg.

5,

4,

3,

2,

1.

Let's move to another leg.

5,

4,

3,

2,

1.

Now put your hands down alongside your body.

Do you feel any sensations in your legs?

Maybe it feels like a waterfall or the rain falling on them.

This is called tingling.

Or maybe you feel the ants walking all over you.

Do you like it?

It's your body reacting to your touch and relaxing.

Now shake your body.

Again and again.

You just moved some energy from the top of your head to the very bottom of your feet.

We are all made of energy,

These small parts of the bigger cosmos of things.

Now think for a moment about all the people and all the things that you love.

Your mom and dad,

Your sister or brother,

Your grandma and grandpa,

Your aunts,

Uncles,

Cousins,

Your friends,

Teachers and your neighbors,

Your toys,

Books,

Your favorite foods.

There are so many wonderful things to love and cherish in the world.

Be happy for them,

Respect them,

Be grateful for your wonderful,

Beautiful body.

Now say out loud,

I am kind,

I am beautiful,

I am smart,

I am funny,

I am lovable,

I am who I am.

Take the last deep breath in and out.

Open your eyes.

You have just finished meditating.

Come back to it,

Maybe once a day,

Maybe two.

Thank you.

Or as the yogis say,

Namaste.

It means I see the light in you,

Because I do.

What a delightful enchanting little meditation! Made me smile and feel like a kid again. Magical and simple. Even though it’s made for children I think it’s wonderful for adults too :)
