Are your decisions and desires moved or changed by the things others say to you?
Do you make decisions and do things in order to make someone else happy?
Hello,
My name is Jacqueline and welcome to my Tranquil Spirits podcast.
I shared with someone about a movie I was interested in seeing and after their response,
Which was not what I was expecting,
It got me thinking.
The movie was called Clifford,
The Big Red Dog and it looked cute and fun.
But that's a children's movie,
Came the rather shocked response.
Why would you want to see that?
I then began questioning myself.
Should I be watching children's movies?
I don't like horror movies or war or fighting movies.
They just make me feel negative and not very warm and happy inside.
I am over 60,
But should that matter?
I didn't think so because the way children's movies are written,
They mostly all teach something positive,
Which I sometimes feel adults could learn a thing or two from.
So why do I enjoy children's movies?
Well,
They make me smile,
Laugh,
Feel good.
And I enjoy the reminder of the life lesson given to the watching audience.
So why in that moment of conversation did I feel as if I was not normal in enjoying children's movies?
Most of us at one time or another can be influenced by what others think about us.
Look at social media,
For instance,
How people post their perfect life and perfect pets,
Perfect hair and makeup,
Their perfect home cooked food and their perfectly kept tidy homes.
This can make us feel unachieved,
Not good enough,
Or that we are not living our best life.
But what makes one person happy may not make another happy.
It's okay to think differently,
To enjoy different things,
But it's not okay to make others feel inferior or that their life choices are wrong.
Every one of us should be comfortable with our own life and enjoying it each day in whatever way that is for ourselves.
Having a tidy home with well-behaved pets and a gourmet meal cooked and put on the table each night with not a hair out of place and makeup applied like a makeup artist lives with us is not real life for the majority of us.
And if you have children,
Does your house look clean and tidy like a show house most of the time?
Probably not.
Being influenced by the wrong kind of people can affect our emotions,
If we allow it to.
Just because I am an adult,
That doesn't mean I can't enjoy these children's movies.
Children can teach us so much.
We just have to watch them.
They play with no expectation or worry.
They just want to have fun.
They smile,
Laugh easily,
And love to feel love unconditionally.
They play like no one's watching and love to do crazy things to make people laugh.
They seem to have no fear and will be adventurous in as many ways as they can.
Children don't set out to make anyone happy except themselves,
And that in turn makes people around them happy.
So why don't we do that?
We do things which we feel will make others happy,
Thinking this will also make us happy,
But it seldom does.
We can't make others happy.
We can't make others happy in the same way that they can't make us happy.
Happiness has to come from within.
If others feel unhappy by our actions,
It has nothing to do with us.
They need to look inside themselves and figure out their own unhappiness.
When we change what we feel is right for our own happiness,
And instead of trying to make someone else happy,
We will eventually feel resentful and miserable.
Now I'm not saying don't do nice things for others.
I'm saying don't stop being you and enjoying the things you like just to please someone else.
So if your happiness comes from watching a children's movie,
Go see that movie alone if necessary.
Life is full of choices,
Hundreds of choices we make every day.
Make that choice to make you happy.
Only then will your happiness be sincere and radiate out to others.
No matter your age,
Life is for having fun.
We don't all like the same things.
But don't miss out on something you will enjoy just to please someone else.
Live your best life every day.
I do,
And so should you.
