Hello friends.
Today I would like to share with you a little encouragement to,
No matter what is happening in your life inwardly,
No matter what's happening in the world outwardly,
To find some moments in the day to connect,
To connect to yourself,
To connect to spirit,
To be open to greater vision.
This is not to deny whatever in your life or in the world needs your attention,
Your wise response.
On the contrary,
It's to help bring a sense of calm and clarity and clear vision to however you respond.
So the way I invite this kind of awareness into my day spontaneously is to periodically stop,
Particularly when I'm walking,
To literally stop,
Look up and see wherever my eye falls,
The movement of a tree branch,
A cloud,
A reflection,
Shining on a building,
The way light falls,
And to allow myself to feel whatever the body is feeling in that moment.
Breeze on my cheek,
A chill in my fingers,
Hunger perhaps,
Just noticing what's there as a kind of channel for presence,
Attentiveness.
I might pause at my desk during the day and notice whatever sounds are around me,
Particularly ambient sounds that I've tuned out,
Outdoor sounds,
Indoor sounds,
Just resting into the pure experience of listening.
Even if just for an instant,
Smelling any scent in the air,
As I do this right here now with you,
I notice that I can hear my own heartbeat,
Which I had not noticed at all before this moment,
Noticing the experience of my breath and the gentle way my upper eyelid touches the lower lid when I blink.
These tiny micro-noticings are portals for spirit,
Ways for me to touch into more than just the little bubble of my own thoughts.
They allow my heart and my mind to grow just a little bigger or expanded with each breath,
With each noticing.
And when you look up at the bird in the tree or the cloud,
The raindrops accumulating on windowpane,
I invite you to notice what's looking back,
Who is looking back,
Not a question that needs to be answered,
But one that can be met with great curiosity,
A question to rest in,
Is looking back and noticing if there's joy in there.
Joy in the noticing.
And I'll end by offering you this little quote from the 12th century Christian mystic Meister Eckhart who said,
The eye through which I see God is the same eye through which God sees me.
My eye and God's eye are one eye,
One seeing,
One knowing,
One love.
My dear friend,
Be well.
