Welcome.
Find a comfortable position where your body can feel fully supported.
If it feels comfortable for you,
Gently close your eyes.
Take a slow,
Deep breath in.
And slowly breathe out.
Again,
Breathing in.
And breathing out.
Allow your shoulders to soften.
Relax your jaw.
Let your hands rest comfortably.
With each breath,
Allow yourself to arrive more fully in this moment.
There is nowhere else you need to be.
Nothing you need to solve.
Nothing you need to figure out.
Just this breath.
And this moment.
Before we continue,
I'd like to share one simple idea with you.
Many of us believe that the goal is to stop reacting.
But that's not actually possible.
As human beings,
Emotions arise automatically.
We don't choose the first feeling that appears.
We don't choose whether we feel hurt,
Disappointed,
Frightened,
Or frustrated.
What we do choose is what happens next.
Between the emotion we feel and the action we take,
There is a small space.
Most of us move through that space so quickly that we don't even realize it's there.
But with practice,
That space begins to grow.
And within that space lies one of the greatest freedoms we have.
The freedom to choose our response rather than simply acting on our first reaction.
As we move through this meditation today,
There's nothing you need to force or change.
Simply become curious.
See if you can notice that space for yourself.
It may only be a second at first.
But sometimes a single second is enough to change everything.
Now bring to mind a recent moment when something someone said or did stirred a strong emotional reaction within you.
Perhaps someone criticised you.
Misunderstood you.
Dismissed your feelings.
Ignored you.
Or simply didn't respond in the way you had hoped.
You don't need to replay the entire story.
Just allow yourself to reconnect with the feeling.
Even if you don't have a particular memory in mind,
Try to connect to feelings that you've felt in the past.
Notice what begins to happen in your body.
Perhaps there is tightness in your chest.
And not in your stomach.
Heat in your face,
A racing heart or tension in your shoulders.
Whatever you notice,
Simply observe it.
There is nothing wrong with what you're feeling.
You're simply becoming aware.
Now notice the thoughts that accompany those sensations.
Perhaps your mind wants to explain,
To defend,
To justify,
To blame.
To withdraw.
Or to replay the conversation again and again.
Without trying to stop these thoughts,
Simply watch them.
Light clouds drifting across a wide blue sky.
They can come.
They can go.
You don't need to hold on to them.
Now I'd like to offer you another perspective.
We often believe we're reacting to what's happening right now.
But more often than we realise,
We're reacting to what this moment reminds us of.
A single comment today.
Can awaken an old hurt,
A familiar fear.
A memory of not feeling seen,
Not feeling heard.
Not feeling enough.
The present moment quietly touches the past.
And before we realize it,
The past begins speaking through us.
Not because we're weak.
Not because we're failing.
But because our minds are beautifully designed to protect us from pain they've experienced before.
Take a slow gentle breath in.
Silently say,
This is this moment.
And as you breathe out,
Silently say,
Not every feeling belongs to today.
Again,
Breathing in,
This is this moment.
Breathing out.
Not every feeling belongs to today.
Feel the space these words begin to create.
Now imagine that between the trigger and your response,
A small doorway appears.
Most of us rush straight through without ever noticing it.
But today,
You pause.
You step into that doorway.
Time slows.
Within this pause.
There is no need to defend.
No need to prove.
No need to decide immediately.
There is simply awareness.
Breathing.
Observing.
Choosing.
Allow your breath to become your anchor.
Each inhale creating a little more space.
Each exhale softening the urgency to react.
Silently repeat after me.
I can feel this emotion.
Without becoming this emotion.
I don't need to solve this right now.
I have time.
I can choose my next step.
Now gently return to that same situation.
Imagine the other person's words are exactly the same.
Nothing outside of you has changed.
But something inside of you has.
You take one conscious breath before responding.
You become curious instead of defensive.
You listen instead of preparing your next argument.
Perhaps you'd calmly say,
Tell me more.
Or I need a moment before I answer.
Or perhaps you simply choose silence.
Not because you have nothing to say,
But because you are giving wisdom the opportunity to speak before fear does.
Notice how different that feels.
Notice the strength within that pause.
Notice the calm that begins to emerge.
Now imagine carrying this pause into every part of your life.
Into conversations with your children.
With your partner,
Your family.
Your friends.
Your colleagues,
Even into the conversations you have with yourself.
Every pause becomes an opportunity.
An opportunity to respond with kindness instead of habit.
With wisdom instead of fear.
With intention instead of impulse.
And perhaps you'll discover that true freedom doesn't come from controlling what other people say or do.
It comes from remembering that no one else gets to choose who you become in the next moment.
Only you.
Take one final slow,
Deep breath in.
And gently breathe out.
Allow these final words to settle within you.
You don't have to stop your emotions.
You don't have to become someone who never feels hurt.
Or frustrated.
Or afraid.
You simply need to create enough space to choose what comes next.
Because between what happens and what you do next lies your greatest freedom.
Every pause is a new beginning.
Every conscious breath is another opportunity to become the person you wish to be.
Carry that pause with you today.
Trust it.
Practice it.
And remember.
.
.
Sometimes a single breath.
Can change everything.
When you're ready,
Begin to notice the surface supporting your body.
Become aware of the sounds around you.
Gently wiggle your fingers and your toes.
Take one last nourishing deep breath.
And when the time feels right,
Open your eyes.
Remember.
Your greatest freedom is never far away.
It's waiting in your very next pause.
