Take a moment to settle in.
Perhaps your mind has been busy for a while now,
One thought leading to another,
Replaying something that happened,
Thinking about something you need to do,
Worrying about something that might happen.
Or trying to work something out.
And perhaps you've reached that familiar point where you just wish you could switch your mind off.
But for these next few minutes,
You don't need to make your mind go blank.
You don't need to stop thinking.
And you don't need to figure anything out.
Instead,
You're simply going to practice giving your mind a little less to do.
So please take a slow,
Comfortable breath in.
And gently breathe out.
Again,
Breathing in.
And breathing out.
Let your breathing be natural.
There's nothing you need to control.
Now notice where your body is making contact with whatever is supporting you.
Perhaps your feet are on the floor.
Perhaps you're sitting in a chair.
Or maybe you're lying down.
Feel that support beneath you.
Notice the weight of your body.
The sensation of your clothing against your skin.
The temperature of the air around you.
And just for a moment,
Allow your attention to come out of your thoughts.
And into your body.
Your mind may still be busy,
That's okay.
When a thought appears,
You don't need to push it away.
And you don't need to follow it.
You can simply notice there's a thought.
And then gently return to your breath.
Perhaps you have a thought about something that needs to be done.
Notice it.
And let it pass.
Perhaps you remember something from earlier.
Notice it.
And let it pass.
Perhaps your mind starts imagining what might happen tomorrow or next week.
Or sometime in the future.
Simply notice it and then let it pass.
You don't have to solve every thought simply because your mind has produced it.
You don't have to answer every question.
You don't have to finish every mental conversation.
Some thoughts can simply be thoughts.
Just let them go.
Take another slow breath in.
And breathe out.
And quietly remind yourself.
I don't have to figure this out right now.
Again,
I don't have to figure this out right now.
There may be things that genuinely need your attention,
And you will give them your attention when the time is right.
But right now,
You can give yourself permission to pause.
Imagine placing all those unfinished thoughts into a box,
Not throwing them away,
Not pretending they don't matter.
Just placing them somewhere safe.
So you don't have to carry them for these few moments.
You can come back to them later.
They will still be there if they need you.
Now return to the feeling of your breath.
The gentle movement of your chest.
Or your abdomen.
The air moving in.
And moving out.
If another thought appears,
Let it.
You don't need to be disappointed that your mind is still thinking.
This is the practice.
Simply notice,
But don't follow.
Return.
Notice.
Don't follow.
Return.
You might imagine each thought as a cloud moving across the sky.
You don't have to chase it.
You don't have to hold it in place.
You simply watch it move on.
And then you come back to the sky.
Back to your breath.
Back to this moment.
Take one more slow,
Gentle breath.
And as you breathe out,
Soften your shoulders.
Relax your jaw.
Let your hands become a little heavier.
Your mind doesn't need to be completely quiet for you to feel some peace.
You don't need to switch it off.
You only need to stop giving every thought your full attention.
So if your mind starts racing again later today or tonight,
You can remember this simple practice.
Notice,
Don't follow.
Return.
And perhaps say quietly to yourself,
This thought can wait.
This problem can wait.
I can come back to it when I'm ready.
For now,
There is nothing you need to solve.
Nothing you need to work out.
Nothing you need to chase,
Just this breath.
This moment and a little space.
So take one final comfortable breath in.
And slowly breathe out.
And when you're ready,
Gently bring your attention back to the space around you.
Take your time.
And carry a little of this mental spaciousness with you.
You don't have to switch off completely.
You can simply turn the volume down.
