Hi and welcome.
If you are listening to this,
You may be somewhere that does not yet feel fully like home.
A hotel room,
A temporary stay,
A new bed,
Or a place that is simply not your usual environment.
Or perhaps you were in a place you have been before,
But it still doesn't feel fully familiar to your body yet.
And if sleep feels more difficult tonight,
I want you to know something very simple.
This is completely normal.
Tonight we are not going to try to force sleep.
We are not going to chase it or fix it or make anything happen.
Instead,
We are just going to help your body feel a little more settled in this moment.
Nothing more than that.
Wherever you are,
Gently allow your body to find a comfortable position.
Not perfect comfort,
Just enough.
And if it feels okay,
Allow your eyes to close or soften their focus.
Begin by noticing the points of contact between your body and the surface beneath you.
The weight of you being supported,
Without effort,
Without needing to do anything at all.
And if your mind feels a little more alert than usual,
That is completely okay.
In unfamiliar environments,
The brain naturally becomes more watchful.
It is simply noticing,
Where am I?
What is around me?
Do I need to stay aware?
There is nothing wrong with this.
It is simply a human nervous system doing its job.
And tonight we are not going to fight that part of you.
We are just going to gently let it know that it does not need to stay on high alert right now.
You might imagine that alertness as a part of your mind that has been holding a small light,
A light that has been checking the room,
Making sure everything is okay,
And you are not going to switch that light off.
You are simply going to show it that it does not need to shine quite so brightly anymore.
Nothing is required of it in this moment.
So now gently bring your attention to your breath.
Not changing it,
Not improving it.
Just noticing it,
The inhale arriving on its own.
The exhale leaving on its own.
Nothing you need to control.
Nothing you need to guide.
And as you breathe like this,
You may begin to notice something quietly reassuring.
Your body already knows how to rest.
Even if your mind still feels a little unfamiliar with where you are.
Now gently bring awareness to your face.
Let the muscles around your eyes soften.
Let your jaw loosen slightly.
Let your tongue rest quietly in your mouth.
Nothing here needs to be held.
And your shoulders.
Let them soften simply by no longer holding up against gravity.
There is nothing they need to carry right now.
If thoughts are present,
That is absolutely fine.
You do not need to remove them.
You do not need to follow them.
You can let them drift through like distant movement outside a window.
And if part of you is still aware of this place,
The different sounds,
The different air,
The different feeling of the bed beneath you.
That is okay too.
You are allowed to be here without needing to fully settle into it yet.
Because your body does not actually require familiarity in order to rest.
It only requires safety in this moment.
And we are not forcing that safety.
We are simply allowing it to be noticed.
You might gently repeat in your own mind.
I am safe enough to rest.
I can let go a little more.
I do not need to stay alert.
Again quietly.
I am safe enough to rest.
I can let go a little more.
I do not need to stay alert.
So continue to breathe gently.
In and out.
And if sleep comes,
It will come naturally.
And if it does not,
Rest is still happening.
Your nervous system is still softening.
Your body is still learning that it does not need to stay alert.
There is nowhere you need to go.
Nothing you need to fix.
Nothing you need to hold together tonight.
Just this breath.
Just this body.
Just this moment.
And now,
Very gently.
I'll leave you with something simple to rest into.
You do not need to feel at home here in order to rest here.
You only need to allow yourself to rest.
And you can stay with this as long as you need.
Nothing else is required of you now.
Rest well and sleep well.
You are safe.
