Retired peddler dragging emotional wares from place to place.
The furrow-browed crown of responsibility sits lopsided on your head.
Like beleaguered royalty,
You know how to show up and take care of what needs to be done.
Missed opportunities,
Wrong turns,
Things never spoken,
Things too easily spoken.
Weighted trinkets gathered over a lifetime rattle an overplayed song.
It's refrain bogging down your spirit,
Preventing joy from creeping too close to the surface.
And then,
Struck still in the middle of the road,
A fleeting consideration of how it would feel to shed the noisy mantle of personal history and just be.
Your belly flutters with the epiphany.
As easily as you picked everything up,
You could just lay it all down.
Maybe not forever,
Maybe not even for an hour,
But right now,
You could choose to release your burdens and travel in a completely new way.
The next thought makes your eyes brim with tears.
Could it be this simple?
Moving forward,
One foot in front of the other,
One breath after another,
Drop the things that weigh you down.
Worries,
Regrets,
Fears,
Judgment.
They thud to the ground like ancient armament,
