This is a short practice for gratitude for your food and for all the living beings who made it possible for this food to be here on your table right now.
And you can do this practice before you begin eating,
Taking a moment to reflect,
Or while you are eating.
You can follow my words or let them inspire your own reflections.
Take a moment to look at the food in front of you and simply notice its colors,
The texture and the presence of this meal right here in front of you.
If the food was prepared by you,
Thank yourself for the time,
The effort and the knowledge it took to bring this meal together.
If it was prepared by someone else,
A loved one or a cook in a restaurant,
Offer gratitude for their care,
Their energy and their skill.
Even if you don't know them personally,
You can still appreciate the human effort behind this meal.
And you might even extend this gratitude further,
To the people who taught the cook or supported them in learning their craft,
To all the tools and machines that were part of the process and to the people who invented and built them,
Even to the plate that holds your food and those who designed and created it.
Now bring your awareness to the ingredients themselves.
Perhaps there are potatoes on your plates or rice.
You might reflect on the person who planted those potatoes,
The people who tended and watered them as they grew,
Those who harvested them and prepared them for transport.
Think of all the hands that touched this food along the way,
The workers who packed and delivered it,
The people in the market or store who made it available to you.
And beyond all human effort,
Remember the earth itself,
The soil,
The rain,
The sun and the air,
All working together so that these plants could grow.
The ecosystems and animals whose lives are intertwined with this nourishment in seen and unseen ways.
As you hold this food in your hands or as you taste it,
Allow a quiet sense of gratitude to fill you.
Gratitude for the long journey that brought it here.
Gratitude for the nourishment it offers your body.
And gratitude for the simple gift of being able to eat in this very moment.
Take one more breath filled with gratitude in and out and carry this awareness of gratitude with you as you continue your meal.
Namaste and enjoy your precious meal.
