As I write, Thanksgiving is just around the corner and I felt compelled to record a new gratitude meditation. Gratitude is a practice that’s been done for thousands of years by many different people, including yogis, Buddhist monks, and native American elders. Research has shown that practicing a gratitude meditation regularly can bring almost-immediate benefits that lead to increased levels of well-being and happiness.

Hello,

My name is Sam.

In today's session we're going to explore gratitude.

Whether you subscribe to the metaphysical and spiritual beliefs around the law of attraction or not,

There is scientific data that proves that greater happiness,

More positive emotions,

Even physical benefits are experienced after expressing gratitude.

So let's get into it for ourselves.

Start by getting comfortable.

You can sit or lie down.

It doesn't matter as long as you feel completely relaxed.

And if it feels good,

Close your eyes.

Take a full breath in through your nose if possible and slowly release the breath.

Feel your body starting to slow.

Allow your body to soften and sink down into whatever is beneath you.

Let go of any gripping muscles such as your shoulders,

Abdomen and legs.

Just release any unnecessary tension.

Take another full breath and extend the out breath even longer than before.

Feel yourself quietening inside and out.

What do you like about where you are right now?

Does the cushion feel super comfy?

Can you feel sunlight on your face?

Do you feel cozy and warm and cool and free?

Take a moment to think of just one thing that you like about your present position.

Consider it in detail and allow the sense of gratitude to arise naturally.

Think into that feeling,

Noticing the sensations in your body that come up with this emotion.

You might even feel concentrations of this feeling in specific parts of your body.

Lean into it.

Surrender.

Let's move our awareness slightly further afield.

Think about one item either in the same room as you or something in your home that you love.

Why do you love that particular item?

What is it about it?

Its shape?

Its colour?

The memories attached to it?

Reflect on the item and feel the gratitude develop in your heart and body.

Allow yourself to feel the joy of the moment.

How about a person?

Who is one person in your life that you are grateful for?

Start to form a picture of their face in your mind's eye.

See them smiling at you.

You smile back.

What is it about this person that you are thankful for?

Is it something they did for you?

Something they do?

Something they give you?

How they make you feel?

Identify as many different positive aspects of this human being that you love.

How many can you find?

Where do you feel this gratitude in your body?

There's no right or wrong answer,

We're just observing.

Maybe you feel your heart swell or butterflies in your tummy tingles in your hands.

Let's shift the focus slightly and consider this past week.

Can you identify one thing that happened this week that you're grateful for?

It doesn't need to be anything big.

It can be as simple as a fantastic night's sleep,

A luxurious bath or a delicious meal.

Think back over your week and find just one thing.

Once you have your memory,

Relive and savor everything that was good about it.

Think about how you came to be in that situation,

How you felt,

The emotions you experienced.

Let these feelings of joyfulness wash over and through you.

When we pause and reflect,

There is a lot to be thankful for.

When we no longer take the more simple and obvious things in life for granted,

We become grateful for everything that we have.

Thankful for our breath that gives us life.

Thankful for our hearts beating,

Pumping,

Filling with love and compassion.

Thankful for our eyes that let us see the faces of our loved ones,

Their smiles,

The beauty all around us,

The pretty flowers and the vast blue skies.

Our ears that allow us to hear our favorite music,

Voices of the ones we love,

Laughter,

The birds tweeting,

Silence.

Thankful for our noses that can smell the delicate perfume of a rose,

The freshly cut grass,

The scent of a pine,

The morning coffee percolating in the pot.

Grateful for our hands that let us hold and touch our family,

That open and close,

That clap and bake.

Thankful for our feet and legs that take us where we want to go,

That let us dance like no one's watching,

Splashing puddles and jump around.

Grateful for this roof overhead that provides shelter from the rain,

For this bed,

Chair or floor that supports us,

For this device that allows us to share experiences.

Repeat with me,

I am grateful for all the good in my life.

I am grateful for all the good in my life.

I am thankful for all the blessings in my life.

I'm thankful for all the blessings in my life.

I am thankful for you.

I am thankful for you.

Thank you.

Now let's just linger for a few moments more with these lovely feelings of gratitude and let them permeate every cell in our body.

Now very slowly and gently invite a deeper breath into the body to expand the lungs and to start to reawaken the physical.

You can begin to move your fingers and toes a little,

Curling and stretching them and letting your body make whatever movements it feels inspired to do.

In your own time gradually find your way back into your day and remember to pause and give thanks whenever something pleasing comes your way.

You'll notice that more and more of these little miracles will seek you out.

I wish you all the best and thank you.

You
