Over 10 years ago, I was going through a difficult time. My usual yoga and meditation practices, which had always supported me, no longer seemed to help in the same way. Although I am not Hindu, I have always enjoyed chanting and Kirtan, and I felt particularly drawn to begin a 40-day chanting practice of Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha. My 40-day practice actually took 97 days. I missed a few days along the way and had to begin again. While chanting, I experienced everything from boredom and irritation to inspiration and deep emotion. At first, I whispered the chant so no one else in the house could hear me. When I was alone, I sang it with my whole heart. The practice changed me. I knew I would always be able to handle whatever came my way. I felt lighter, stronger, and more solid. My daughters would often ask me to chant in their rooms as they fell asleep, and to this day, this mantra holds a special place in my heart.
