Hello beloveds and welcome to tonight's reading The Girl Who Sees Ghosts Part 3 As always just taking a moment to arrive here in this space Maybe stretching out in your bed Snuggling down into your pillow and your duvet Maybe allowing your breath to become slower Knowing that there is nowhere you need to be And there is nothing that you need to do It's time for rest and relaxation And when you're ready we shall continue with our story The very next afternoon Sarah ran to the park with her heart thudding like a drum Louise was waiting,
Balancing upside down on the swing as if gravity were only a suggestion You are late,
Louise teased,
Flipping neatly onto her feet I had to finish my homework,
Sarah panted,
But I came as fast as I could Louise winked,
Good,
Because today I want you to meet someone properly Before Sarah could ask who,
A bark rang out,
High,
Cheerful,
And strangely echoing From the far end of the park,
A blur of movement charged toward them It was the ghost dog He was large and scruffy,
His fur a patchwork of glowing mist that shifted like smoke in the wind His eyes shone bright,
And when he wagged his tail,
It swished through the grass without bending a single blade Hello again,
Louise said warmly,
Kneeling to ruffle his insubstantial ears Her hands passed through,
Yet the dog leaned into her touch as though it were real Sarah crouched down nervously,
Does he bite?
Louise laughed,
Only ghosts,
You'll be safe Tentatively,
Sarah reached out,
To her surprise,
Her hand didn't sink through the dog-like fog Instead,
It felt cool and tingly,
Like touching a stream on a frosty morning The dog licked her hand,
Or tried to at least His tongue passed through,
Leaving behind a shiver that made her giggle I think he likes you,
We said,
His name's Bramble Bramble,
Sarah repeated,
Scratching the air just above his glowing ear Mm-hmm,
He told me,
Sarah blinked,
Dogs can talk Louise grinned,
Not in words,
But if you listen carefully,
You'll hear Bramble barked again,
And turned and bounded toward the line of trees at the far edge of the park He stopped,
Looked back,
And barked once more He wants us to follow,
Louise said,
Springing up Sarah hesitated,
Where's he taking us?
Louise's eyes sparkled,
Only one way to find out They ran after the glowing dog,
Weaving between tree trunks and pushing through brambles that snagged Sarah's jumper Bramble darted ahead,
A streak of silver light in the shadows,
Until,
At last,
He stopped at the base of a twisted oak This tree again,
Sarah panted,
Recognizing the ancient oak Louise had once shown her Its bark was scarred and gnarled,
Its roots thick and tangled Bramble whined,
Pawing at the earth between two roots He's trying to show us something,
Louise murmured,
Kneeling beside him Sarah crouched too,
Brushing away leaves and dirt To her shock,
She uncovered the edge of something wooden It's a box,
She gasped,
Louise's silver glow brightened Help me pull it out!
Together,
They tugged and scraped,
Until a small chest emerged,
Its surface cracked with age A rusty padlock clung stubbornly to the front Bramble barked once,
Tail wagging furiously What's inside?
Sarah whispered,
Her heart pounding Louise leaned closer,
Her fingers brushing the lock At her touch,
It crumbled into dust,
Chest creaked open Inside,
Wrapped in faded velvet,
Lay a collar It was old and worn,
But the brass nameplate gleamed faintly Bramble,
Sarah's eyes widened,
It's his collar from when he was alive Louise lifted it reverently No wonder he brought us here,
This must be what's tying him to the park He wanted us to find it Bramble barked again,
Softer this time,
Almost a sigh His glowing tail swished slowly,
As he pressed his head against Louise's knee Sarah felt a lump in her throat Does this mean he can move on now?
Louise nodded gently If he wants to,
The collar was his anchor,
Without it,
He's free For a moment,
Bramble looked between them,
Eyes glowing like twin moons Then,
With a joyful bark,
He leapt into the air His body shimmered brighter and brighter,
Until it dissolved into a hundred glowing sparks Drifting upward like fireflies into the darkening sky Sarah wiped her eyes,
He's gone Louise smiled softly,
Though her own glow flickered faintly Not gone,
Three,
That's different They sat quietly under the oak,
Watching until the last spark faded into the stars Later,
As they walked back toward the swings,
Sarah asked Louise,
Do you think one day you'll move on too?
Louise was silent for a long time Finally,
She whispered Maybe,
But not yet,
Not while I still have you Sarah squeezed her hand And promise you won't leave me Louise smiled,
Though there was something unreadable in her silver eyes A promise,
For now The park felt emptier without Bramble Sarah still half expected to see his glowing form bounding across the grass Tongue lolling,
Tail wagging But the oak tree where they'd found his collar stood silent Its roots curled tight around the earth,
As if it had sealed away the memory Louise noticed the way Sarah glanced toward the tree each day Don't be sad,
She said gently Bramble's not gone forever,
He's just in a place where he doesn't need to be lonely anymore I know,
Sarah said,
But her voice was soft,
It just feels strange without him Louise looped her arm through Sarah's Then,
We'll find somewhere new to explore,
There are plenty of secrets left That evening,
Louise led Sarah through the quieter part of town Where the streets grew narrow,
And the lamplight struggled to reach the cobble stones They stopped before a building Sarah had never noticed before Torn,
With soot-stained bricks,
And windows so dusty they reflected nothing Over the door hung a sign,
Faded and cracked The Old Borough Library It's closed,
Sarah said Louise grinned To the living,
Yes,
But to us,
Not at all She pushed the door,
And though the handle looked rusted solid,
It swung open soundlessly A draught of cool air drifted out,
Carrying the faint scent of old paper and ink Sarah hesitated Are we allowed in?
Louise's eyes twinkled Rules don't matter here,
Only whispers Inside,
The library was enormous Tall shells stretched into darkness Their spines lined with dust Cobwebs shimmered like lace between ladders And the air seemed to hum with quiet energy But it wasn't silence Sarah froze,
Ears straining Shells,
They were whispering Voices murmured softly,
Overlapping like a thousand secrets shared at once She couldn't make out words,
But the sound wrapped around her Like the rustle of leaves in a storm Do you hear that?
She grieved Louise nodded,
Her silver glow brighter in the dimness Every book here belonged to someone who's gone Their words linger,
Their voices never left She reached for a book bound in green leather As her fingers brushed the spine,
The whisper grew louder,
Sharpening into words Dearest Margaret,
The roses bloomed today and I thought of you The voice was clear,
Aching with tenderness Sarah gasped Louise smiled Letters,
Diaries,
Stories,
They all come alive here For hours,
They wandered the shelves Louise showed Sarah how to tilt her head just so,
To tune in to the voices of the books Sarah heard a sailor describing a storm at sea A child scribbling about her first day at school A painter noting the colours of a sunset Each book was a life captured,
Lingering like Bramble's collar,
Refusing to fade It's like a whole world,
Sarah whispered Louise nodded A library of ghosts But not all the whispers were gentle As they moved deeper,
The air grew colder Shadows pooled between the shelves,
And the voices grew sharp,
Hissing rather than murmuring Sarah shivered What's that?
She asked,
Her voice trembling Louise's glow dimmed slightly Some memories aren't kind Some people left behind anger,
Or sorrow,
Or fear The books keep those,
Too They rounded a corner,
And Sarah stopped short A book floated in the air Its pages fluttering,
Though there was no wind The whisper from it was harsh and broken,
Like someone crying out in pain Louise stepped protectively in front of Sarah Don't listen too long,
Sad memories can cling if you're not careful But the book seemed to tug at Sarah,
Drawing her forward She could almost hear words forming Still waiting,
Still waiting Her chest tightened Louise,
What if it's someone like you?
What if they are stuck,
Too?
Louise hesitated,
Her eyes soft Maybe,
But we can't help everyone Sarah bit her lip,
Torn between fear and compassion At last,
Louise tugged her gently away Come on,
There's something else I want you to see It climbed the spiral staircase,
That wound higher and higher Until it opened into a domed room The ceiling was glass,
And through it,
A knife Night sky glittered,
Like spilled jewels In the center of the room,
Stood a single lectern And on it,
A book,
Larger than any Sarah had ever seen Its cover shimmered faintly,
As though woven from starlight This,
Louise whispered,
Is the Book of Echoes Sarah stared,
What's in it?
Louise stepped closer,
Her silver glow brushing the edges of the cover Everything,
Every memory,
Every life,
Every whisper ever written But it only opens when the time is right As if in answer,
The book gave a faint shiver Then stilled again Louise smiled at Sarah,
Her expression unreadable Maybe,
One day,
It will open for you
