Why Coherent Breathing? (Let's do this)
by Reuben Lowe
Coherent breathing is a simple form of breathwork that supports the nervous system by slowing the breath to a steady rhythm. This practice helps bring the body into a calmer, more regulated state. Over time, it can support a calm mind and greater emotional balance. It’s a powerful mindfulness tool that can be used anytime.

Hey guys,
So it's Reuben here again and this is about coherent breathing.
Now here on Insight Timer,
We actually have a section just for coherent breathing and I want to give you a very simple explanation of why that is.
So coherent breathing is around five seconds in and five seconds out and there's a reason for this because it's around this specific time frame of five and five that the heart and the lungs begin to lock into rhythm.
So it's approximate but it's around 5.
5 breaths per minute.
This is where resonance frequency happens.
Like I said,
The heart and the lungs lock together.
The body shifts from stress mode,
From protection mode and into connection mode,
Rest and restore.
Naturally feeling more calm but here's the thing,
Actually not sleepy but more alert.
So right here and now,
Let your shoulders drop.
We're just going to have a little practice but only a little one because there's other resources here where you can listen to the full meditation guides.
So like I said,
Let your shoulders drop and here it is.
This is what it's like.
We're going to go in for five and out for five and that's it.
All right,
So just allow yourself when you're ready.
Let's do this.
In two,
Three,
Four,
Five.
Out two,
Three,
Four,
Five.
In two,
Three,
Four,
Five.
Out two,
Three,
Four,
Five.
In two,
Three.
That's it,
You've got this.
Out two,
Three,
Four,
Five.
In two,
Three.
More and more natural.
Out two,
Three,
Four,
Five.
In.
This is the pace your body craves.
Out.
In.
Let the rhythm carry you.
Out.
Good job.
So little intro there and very necessary because of that coherence that happens between the heart and the lungs.
This is why we choose the five five or coherent breathing.
And remember,
It's about wakefulness.
Yes,
Groundedness,
But also wakefulness.
So I hope you enjoy the resources that you find for this coherent breathing here on Insight Timer.
