Details

Exhale deeply in Upaya’s first retreat designed for Black, Indigenous and People Of Color (BIPOC) that creates a refuge of belonging, connectedness, and joy. This is a place where our stories, identities, and journeys are held with care, respect, and gratitude. Through practices of mindfulness meditation and with a unique emphasis on mindfulness in the natural world, we will nurture our collective healing and strengthen our capacity for resilience, love, and generosity in our lives and communities. Now more than ever, we need a renewed commitment to social and environmental engagement and justice in this very complex time of the global polycrisis. Together we will deepen our insight and understanding of the roots of structural violence so we can engage in the world with joy, creativity, courage, love, and hope. This retreat will ground us in nature, ritual, connection, and contemplative practices that renew and sustain body, mind, and spirit. Surrounded by a community of like-minded seekers, the retreat provides a brave space to slow down and nurture integrity and the courage to lean into socially engaged action. Previous experience in meditative practices are not required to attend. Open to all self-identified Black, Latinx, Asian, Indigenous, and People of Color.

Upaya Zen Center is a Zen Buddhist practice, service, and training center. Our vision focuses on the integration of practice and social action, bringing together wisdom and compassion. We are a global community for those working to create racial, economic, and environmental justice, compassionate care for the most vulnerable, and a place of committed, daily contemplative practice and learning through our retreats, trainings, and programs, free Dharma podcasts, and community services. Our mission is to provide a context for community practice, education in Buddhism, and social service in the areas of death and dying, prison work, the environment, women’s rights, and peacework.
