Details

Eating can be a deeply troubling experience for some of us. The urge to reach for food, eat when not hungry, think about food obsessively, or create plans to restrict oneself or diet are all difficult. A battle is underway. Eating for emotional and psychic reasons seems normal. Eating industrial foods also seems normal. Food is available in abundance everywhere in many of our cultures in the world. Food can be comforting, distracting, temporarily satisfying, and even feel like a drug. It is possible to experience peace with food, eating, your body, and your mind. You can stop acting on your cravings. The Eating Peace Retreat focuses on understanding and finding empowerment and freedom with emotions, thinking, impulses, cravings, fear, powerlessness, and self-criticism. It’s a retreat about noticing, awareness, and watching thoughts that scream at you to eat (or diet), rather than following them like they’re in charge and commanding you to comply. Even if you’re an expert in diet and exercise….people who come to Eating Peace can learn how to work with the act of eating so they never have to over or under-eat again. The war you've been waging with eating, your weight, and certain foods (and feelings) can end. In the Eating Peace Retreat, you'll experience a deeper approach to understanding your behaviors, actions, cravings, and dynamics with food, and leave with a sense of freedom with food. Here are some of the keys we cover in the Eating Peace Retreat (open to men and women): *How to identify and dis-identify what you’re thinking and believing that leads to eating off-balance *The process of awareness and relaxing your mind, beginning with self-inquiry, that interrupts the cycle of reaching for food, obsessing about food, managing food and eating, or feeling guilty about food, eating, or your body *Accessing a new feeling of rest and awareness when it comes to hunger, fullness, and emotions *Mindful eating practice and following your inner discerned guidance and commitment around balanced whole and healthy food *Feeling the body and resting with it, being with it, without judgment. Noticing our sensations and welcoming them all. The somatic experience of feeling, without terror or condemnation, or disgust. *Moving meditation – you will attend a special event on Saturday morning. You'll get to practice taking care of your own body, to have fun, and to be with the body freely with a feeling sense throughout the retreat–-and to identify your stressful thoughts when they arise. *The Work of Byron Katie is our primary way of working with thoughts, being with self-inquiry and deep investigation of the patterns we are stuck in, and how to break out of them. We’ll use some important exercises to sink into our awareness of what’s going on with eating, food, and self-judgment or self-care. *You'll have a map and experience you can take with you to continue your journey in your daily life after the retreat. In the Eating Peace Retreat, we are using food and eating as a springboard for our enlightenment. The enlightenment of knowing we are accepted and acceptable as we are, nothing is missing, nothing is required. To touch this results in balance with food, naturally.

Meals

Not included - self catered

On the Eating Peace Retreat, participants will acquire and manage their own food as a part of the important experience of being with themselves, choosing their own food, and being with others as we eat together for two meals a day. There are many places to get food nearby, every kind of food you can think of, and grocery stores of several kinds. It is highly unlikely you'll be in a place where your unique diet cannot be catered to. You will not be served food on this retreat by others, intentionally. This is a powerful part of the process that helps you be a part of your food and eating process in a way most like how you'll be when you're out in the world in day-to-day life. You will feel what it's like to eat in balance and be free in the presence of the foods that most work for you, without deprivation.

Schedule

We begin on Tuesday, November 11th in the evening with our first gathering. You'll get introduced to each other, and to Grace. We will also have an introduction to self-inquiry and identifying the thoughts we've had that have fueled our off-balance eating. We use The Work of Byron Katie to question our perspectives and uncover new ways to be with food, eating, and life itself. For the next 4 days together, we'll meet mornings from 9-Noon, afternoons from 3-5:30, and evenings from 7-9 pm. All periods are slightly variable to allow for time to complete exercises and come to a natural break. Exercises tackle many of the areas we tend to feel concerned about; concerns about body shape and size, acceptance from others and ourselves, connection to others or lack of it, family of origin and their thoughts and feelings about eating, weight, and body image, how satisfying we are with our work/career in the world, primary relationships, the family dinner table, and our "immunity to change". We'll look at cravings, urges, shoulds/shouldnts, needs, fear, shame, and anger. As a part of the retreat, we'll have some silent meditation, walking silent meditation outdoors, and guided mindful eating. This is not a retreat for "head" exercises in thinking and analyzing only--we spend time feeling what it's like to Not Believe our thoughts and try on new ways to be. We will have the opportunity for a field trip as a physical experience of body acceptance and expression on the Saturday of our retreat in the morning. We will meet at 8am on Saturday and end before dinner. If anyone is hoping to arrange time with loved ones who live in Seattle when you are from out of town, Saturday evening is the best (and only) time for this. The retreat is held in a very safe and accepting container with a highly skilled facilitator. Each day builds on the previous day's exercises, culminating in a powerful final closing exercise on Sunday morning that helps you create a road map for your journey after retreat.

Testimonials

info

I know that speaking shame is the way to help it have less power, but to experience this around food and body was profound. It all worked for me, the content was just what I needed. Grace is amazing, She was able to meet each person just as they are.

Emily, United States

The underlying current of negative thoughts about myself surrounding food, weight and diet became clearer to me--particularly through the writing and meal exercises. Grace is phenomenal. She makes the retreat a 10/10; no matter what made me uncomfortable her energy and presence made it a safe environment. Her guidance and sharing of her experience were invaluable.

Sara, France

Grace is lovely. Willing, receptive, welcoming to it all. She lives The Work. The eating process, as difficult as it was, was immensely helpful. I loved eating together and seeing how others related to food and to life.

Laurie, Canada

I can eat mindfully. The meditations were very helpful. Grace was wonderful. She really knows the Work of Byron Katie and how to apply it to disordered eating. It was wonderful to meet such a wonderful group and hear their stories.

Katie, United States

I learned that I don’t need to eat the amount I am eating, and I can slow down. Grace was excellent. She knows how to manage and use opportunities for learning. It was wonderful.
