Details
The Ikaria Blue Zones Experience is an intimate, immersive retreat designed to slow you down to the rhythm of one of the world’s longest-living communities. Hosted alongside local Ikarian co-host Thea at her family inn, this is not a surface-level tour — it’s lived longevity in action. Our days unfold through simple, powerful rituals: walking mountain paths, cooking seasonal food with locals, sharing long late dinners, swimming in clear Aegean waters, and downshifting properly. Blue Zones principles are not taught in a classroom — they’re experienced through food, movement, connection, purpose and rest. Guided by mindfulness practices and grounded conversation, this retreat offers space to recalibrate your nervous system, reconnect to what matters, and explore what your “second act” can look like — with vitality and intention. Small group. Real conversations. Practical longevity you can actually take home.

Thea's Inn is located in the picturesque village of Nas, known for its unique river valley, beach, and hiking trails. It is still run by my family today as it was when we first opened over twenty years ago – the new generation is growing, and I take pride in watching my sons get involved in running the restaurant. My husband, an accomplished organic farmer, still supplies the produce that is brought to the kitchen from our farm each morning to be cooked for the restaurant’s lunch and dinner. We are known for our traditional cuisine that is prepared in the same way it has been for generations, by our special resident cook, Athina, who introduced the Blue Zone team to many Ikarian recipes. Her story and many of her recipes, which were passed down through her family for generations, feature in the Blue Zone Solution cookbook. The restaurant terrace is one of the best spots on the island to enjoy a glass of wine at sunset overlooking the sea before dinner, as a perfect start to the evening. We also offer five simple and rustic rooms, all with ceramic tile floors, twin beds, a private bath, and a personal refrigerator in case you want to bring home fresh food, herbs, or fruits you may have foraged during a hike. Each room has a set of French doors that open to a private balcony overlooking the Aegean Sea.

Our home for the week is Thea’s Inn — a family-run guesthouse nestled in the hills of Ikaria, where life moves to the island’s natural rhythm. This is not a polished resort or luxury hotel. It’s authentic, warm, and deeply rooted in local life. Expect simple, comfortable rooms, sweeping views, home-cooked meals, and the kind of hospitality that feels personal rather than transactional. Staying here means stepping into real Ikarian living — waking to fresh mountain air, lingering over slow breakfasts, and gathering in shared spaces that invite conversation and connection. It’s intimate, unpretentious, and perfectly aligned with the Blue Zones way of life: community, simplicity, and heart.

Food in Ikaria is simple, seasonal and deeply connected to the land. Much of what we eat is grown within Thea’s family gardens or sourced locally from neighbouring farms — fresh vegetables, wild greens, legumes, olive oil, herbs and fruit picked close to home. The cuisine leans naturally toward plant-based dishes, as is traditional in Ikaria, though it is not exclusively vegetarian. Expect hearty stews, garden salads, slow-cooked beans, local cheeses, fresh bread, island wine and the occasional locally sourced meat or fish. Vegetarian diets are easily catered for. Vegan options may be more limited due to the traditional use of local cheeses and yoghurt, but we will always do our best within the rhythms of village life. Meals are shared, generous and often unhurried — long tables, conversation, laughter and the kind of nourishment that goes far beyond the plate.
