Does anyone glimpse how full her heart swells?
How her mind flickers with blinding light?
She feels too much,
Too little,
A scale never balanced,
Always shifting.
She compares herself the way her mother taught her,
Measuring her worth in invisible currency.
The world moving past her as if she were an untouchable object made of glass.
She waits to be known.
Her spirit an unopened letter.
She wants to be cherished,
Adored,
Loved,
Beyond the confines of her own body,
Her own imagination,
Her own beating heart,
Each beat worn by years of longing,
Judged,
Corrected,
Advised,
Others gently recoiling as if she carries exile written on her skin.
Is she flawed?
Too much?
Not enough,
As they all seem to say.
No one reaches to show her,
Her loyalty,
Her goodness,
Her faithfulness.
She's only ever been good.
Her heart loyal and true,
A bright star in the sky unseen.
Will she be loved?
She hears the drumbeat of her heart ask this question,
Battered by longing.
She remains in the back,
Not knowing if she will be invited forward.
Yet even in the shadow,
Hope is a small lamp she still carries.
She holds it close,
Its glow trembling,
But unextinguished.
Those voices threaten to snuff it out.
Sadness,
Loneliness,
The ache of being unseen.
But she shields it with cupped hands,
Refusing to let it die.
She begins to see that being known begins with seeing herself.
Over and over again.
Perhaps one day,
Others will catch the light she tends so carefully.
Perhaps the invitation will come.
Or perhaps she will step forward herself.
Heart battered with longing but still beating brightly.
Lanternal light inside.
The sorrow and the hope living together in her chest.
A duet of ache and hope.
She remains.
Waiting.
But no longer only waiting,
For within her the courage to be known and to love herself.
Gross.
