Hello and welcome to this talk about my big philosophy on the world of work and there's a few things that I learned while I was working that really helped me in my relationships with other people and at the core of this philosophy is a lot of very useful beliefs.

My name is Jackie Wright and I'm an NLP Master Practitioner and Trainer so many of these things come from the wisdom of NLP and the great thing about beliefs is that they don't have to be true to work they just have to be useful and one of those useful beliefs is the one that really started my ideas about how to survive and thrive in the world of work I'm going to take you back in time to 2001 and I was a sales team leader in a contact center for a major bank.

I had a team of mortgage advisors of varying capabilities and I had to coach them and encourage them to meet targets.

Now the most frustrating thing for me was that I couldn't work out why.

Some of the team were brilliant,

Some were average and some just didn't seem to improve.

The thing is they all got the same coaching from me,

A style called grow and that was the system that was advocated by the bank.

Yet it didn't seem to work for everyone.

I started to think that the ones that didn't improve just weren't trying hard enough and ended up giving them less quality coaching than ones that actually responded.

Performance became a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I was giving them everything I could or so I thought.

It was up to them how they responded.

Also I frequently found myself frustrated with the performance of some of my colleagues who I felt were not up to the job.

I was judgmental and in all honesty my attitude was less than complimentary.

All I did was wind myself up and question the motives of my colleagues.

Why were they so bad at their job?

None of this was helping me survive and thrive in that world of work.

Later that year I became an NLP practitioner which is chock full of useful beliefs and the one I applied to this situation was no one turns up to do a bad job.

Okay I can hear some of you saying well that's not true for a start.

I know some people who,

So it seems to me,

Turn up and do a bad job on purpose and I'll ask you to just think about that for a minute and here's a question for you.

The last time you didn't do a great job at something,

You know,

That time you got it wrong,

Did you do it deliberately?

I doubt it.

It was probably because you made an honest mistake or maybe you just didn't know how to do it better.

So adopting this no one turns up to do a bad job belief about the people that I worked with totally changed my attitude to the ones that didn't improve as much as the others.

I stopped blaming them for the failure and started to see them as individuals who wanted to succeed but just didn't know how.

It even allowed me to see that not everyone is suited to the same work so where I could help them find a role that suited them best to succeed I did just that.

I never sacked a single member of my team nor took them down the performance route.

I just helped them find their own place in the world of work where they could have the best chance to succeed.

I upped my coaching game and tailored my approach to the individual,

Really getting to know them,

Solid in my belief that they wanted to succeed.

I stopped being frustrated with my colleagues and started to offer help with the things that I knew how to do that they might find useful.

My work life became less frustrating and more fulfilling and all because of one simple but useful belief,

No one turns up to do a bad job.

So I'm inviting you to use this belief in your world of work or just in your world in general,

This week,

Today and as long as you want and notice how it changes the way you think about those who may not be succeeding and let it help you help them.

So thank you for listening,

I'm Jackie Wright otherwise known as The Cockney Coach and I'm inviting you to listen to my other tracks and I have a course on other NLP presuppositions and how they can help you in your relationships.

So I hope to catch you again soon,

Love to you.
