Oftentimes,
We catch ourselves trying to outrun what we feel,
To stay busy,
Stay distracted,
Stay one step ahead of it.
It is our instinct,
After all,
To brace,
To push it away,
Or to try to make sense of it too quickly.
But today,
I'm inviting you to try another way,
One that doesn't require us to fight what we feel,
But to let it be here.
Find a comfortable position,
Letting your body be supported by the chair or the floor,
And gently close your eyes or soften your gaze,
And begin by noticing your breath.
You are not changing it,
Just feel the inhale and feel the exhale.
Let your shoulders drop,
Let your jaw soften,
Relax the space between your eyes,
And gently bring your awareness inward,
And notice if there's any emotion present for you today.
Something uncomfortable,
Something heavy,
Something you might usually try to push past or move away from.
Just notice what is already here.
And as you notice it,
See if you can simply name it,
Softly in your mind.
Sadness,
Tension,
Frustration,
Whatever it is.
Just name it,
With no judgment.
Allow it to be here,
Just for this moment.
Now bring your attention back to your breath,
And as you inhale,
Silently say,
This is here.
And as you exhale,
And I can be with it.
Inhale,
This is here.
Exhale and I can be with it.
Allow this feeling to exist,
Without needing it to go away.
Now imagine the emotion as something passing through,
Like a cloud in the sky,
Or a wave in the ocean.
You are not the cloud.
You are not the wave.
You are the space it moves through.
Where does this feeling live in your body?
And is it tight,
Heavy,
Restless?
Just observe,
Without trying to fix it.
If your mind starts to analyze,
To react or resist,
Gently come back to your breath.
Back to this is here,
And I can be with it.
There is nothing you need to push away,
And nothing you need to hold on to.
Just a quiet allowance in your steady presence,
And maybe underneath it all,
There's a small sense of strength to that,
That you can feel and still be here.
Take one more slow breath in,
And a long breath out.
And as you begin to come back,
Carry this with you.
You don't have to run from your experience.
You can meet it,
Moment by moment.
And when you're ready,
Open up your eyes.
Beautifully done,
My friend.
