Hello and welcome.

My name is Lou Redmond and today we're going to explore a practice around overcoming feelings of financial scarcity and some of what we're going to talk about today is inspired by the book The Soul of Money by Lynn Twist which I highly recommend.

And Lynn in her book talks about scarcity and calls it a lie.

That we live in the lie of scarcity and how she defines scarcity as the mindset that tells us we can never have enough and it drives us to strive above and against all for more and more.

And she talks about this myth,

This myth of not enough that many of us live in almost all of the areas of life but certainly when it comes to money we don't feel like there is enough to go around and with that myth as our operating mode we strive,

We contract,

We have an energy of fear,

We hold.

There's not an openness,

There's not a flow with the way that we engage in our money.

And this is opposite to what she describes as the truth of sufficiency.

And sufficiency we can just look to nature for an example of sufficiency.

In nature yes there are times when you reap abundance and there are times when things die away but altogether there is a sufficiency that it is interconnected and it is supportive.

Yet we live in the feelings of it not being enough and it doesn't matter how much or how little you make.

There are billionaires who feel like they don't have enough and are constantly living in that state of scarcity.

So scarcity is not necessarily about the amount of money it's an inner experience.

And nothing points to this more than an example that Lynn shows in this book around the Ashuar tribe which is a tribe in South America I believe which has never encountered money.

Yet in people that went and lived with this tribe what they found was that they had an experience of enoughness.

They were able to live in a state of sufficiency even without money.

And that's very very interesting because when we can take that lesson into our own lives we can realize that actually that feeling of enoughness,

That feeling of sufficiency that might open us to abundance is actually internal.

And so we're going to work with this in our practice today to see what energy you have around scarcity and work to open into a state of sufficiency.

And so go ahead and start to shift gears and setting up in a meditation posture whatever that looks like for you.

Sitting in a chair,

Cushion,

Standing,

Maybe lying down.

A place where you can close your eyes and let your body relax.

Let your shoulders relax.

Let your lower body get heavy.

Releasing any tension or tightness as you slow down.

And allowing a few breaths to continue to guide you into your body as you relax and find your center.

Breathing in and breathing out.

When we live in scarcity inherently there is a fear.

A fear that there is not enough.

And so I invite you to connect with whatever fear you have around money and just notice how it impacts your body.

Maybe there's a constriction.

Maybe there's a tightening.

Just sense too how does this fear have you act.

Does it have you hold and grasp?

Does it have you compete and constantly seek more?

And so just noticing if any of those resonate and invitation to bring your hand over your heart and not have to do anything with it.

Just breathe and be with it.

Seeing if you can offer kindness towards yourself.

It makes sense if we feel scarcity to feel like there's not enough.

And so maybe as you hold your heart or breathe and relax and offer yourself kindness.

Just recognizing that it makes sense.

It's okay.

You're not doing it wrong.

In many ways it's what we were indoctrinated in.

This myth of not enough.

So just being with that for another few moments.

I'm gonna invite you to imagine that you are out in a forest.

So in your mind's eye seeing yourself standing in the middle of a forest.

Whatever forest comes to mind.

Maybe it's one you've been to.

Maybe it's just one you're imagining.

And see the ecosystem happening around you.

See how this forest supports itself.

It works together.

There's a sufficiency.

Just see if you can notice how there's no lack in nature.

Just seasons.

Some abundance and sparse but there's movement.

That's all part of the process.

So feel the fullness of this forest scene.

Breathing it in and feeling yourself now become a tree in this forest.

So as you stand maybe you imagine there's roots pouring into the ground.

Starting to feel the deeper depths of your own resourcefulness.

Just as in nature your energy comes from something greater than yourself.

And not from outside but whatever that energy that is beating our hearts.

That has made us into life.

And so feel that nourishment coming from the earth as you root in as a tree.

Really becoming this tree.

You feel the energy moving up the back of the spine and expanding out to your branches to the Sun.

Feel the solidity,

The stableness,

And the enoughness of this.

Drawing your resources from within.

And then letting go of being the tree but staying with this energy and bringing this in as you imagine your current financial situation.

So whatever that might be your bank account,

Your savings,

Your 401k.

However small they might be.

And maybe there's also some debt involved.

And that's okay.

See if you can use the wisdom of the forest to open to how nature operates.

How it supports itself.

How it gets what it needs.

And a core principle to overcoming feelings of scarcity is to remember that what we appreciate appreciates.

What we appreciate appreciates.

And so no matter how little or how much you have,

See if you can feel into the gratitude for the resources that are present.

For the money in your bank account.

For your savings.

And the opportunity to bring awareness to your financial situation with care.

And it's through care that we heal and that we grow.

And so just rooting into this gratitude.

If you're able to access it,

I know it might be challenging.

You might have parts of yourself saying,

No Lou but I don't have this or I'm in debt here.

And I hear that.

And so I honor those parts.

See if you can stay dropped into your heart.

Feel the fullness of this moment.

Just this moment.

And take a breath in with me.

And letting it go.

And slowly starting to open your eyes.

Come back to your room.

I really want to encourage you to start a gratitude practice with your money.

However little you might have.

Because that is going to help soften those feelings of scarcity.

And open us to growth.

To appreciating and seeing what we appreciate,

Appreciate.

So really want to invite you to be like nature.

To see life in a way that understands that there's more than enough to go around.

I hope this gives some ease to your concern.

So you can tap into that energy of enoughness and sufficiency.

Thanks so much for exploring this with me.
