Depression can feel heavy, confusing, or like something is wrong with you. But what if your depression isn’t a flaw—what if it’s trying to tell you something? In this video, Lilian introduces an Internal Family Systems approach to understanding depression as a part of you rather than something to fight or eliminate. Instead of trying to overcome it, you’ll be guided to approach your depression with curiosity and respect. By gently turning inward and asking, “What do you want me to know?” you begin a different kind of relationship with what you’re experiencing—one that can open the door to healing. This approach invites compassion where there may have been self-criticism, and understanding where there may have been confusion.

Your depression has a message for you.

What does it want you to know?

If you don't confront it as an enemy,

But listen to it with respect.

It can be a very honest ally.

But how do you listen to depression?

It helps to think of yourself as a whole person with many parts.

Each a distinct aspect of your subconscious or inner world.

This is the invisible place where all your experiences live.

And no time passes.

So the child you once were.

Is in you right now.

Feeling exactly the pain you felt back then.

Knowing the secret truth of what it was to be you.

In that home.

At that school.

With those people.

Still Believing.

What life taught you to believe about yourself.

No matter how wrong or outdated at this point.

We have lots of parts holding all kinds of wounds.

And we have parts that compensate for those wounds.

Parts that manage and motivate us.

Parts that protect us.

Or put out the fire when our pain is burning.

We even have parts that lock our ugliest wounds in the basement.

Never to be seen by anyone.

Sometimes not even us.

Whatever the part,

You will find it.

In your inner world.

It waits for you there.

And the moment you understand it,

That's who you are.

That's what you've been doing.

Doing all this time.

You begin to heal yourself.

Depression can be physiological.

Low thyroid,

Sleep apnea,

Chronic inflammation,

Hormonal changes.

Things your doctor can find and treat with interventions,

Including psychiatric medication.

Often though,

What gets called depression.

Is a part of you doing something.

Maybe it's a child feeling sad and invisible.

Or maybe it's a protector.

Keeping you from risk.

Or muffling your rage.

Or maybe it's two parts in a standoff.

One says,

Leave.

The other says,

You can't.

It might be reacting to another part.

One who silences you or shames you.

Punishes you.

Or drives you to be perfect.

Bullies like that.

Can literally depress.

Another part in there.

Especially if it's a child.

Maybe.

It's a part of you.

That simply needs you to grieve.

Get to know that part.

Really.

Learn about it.

And a shift will happen.

There is a you that isn't depressed.

It is not a part.

It isn't wounded and has no agenda.

This is your core.

Your soul.

Call it whatever feels right to you.

It's the source of your healing.

This depression turning your life into a task.

Can you let it talk?

You don't even need to close your eyes if you don't want to.

The inner world is right there.

Just breathe slowly.

And turn your attention in.

Go into a room inside.

And ask your depression to come there.

It may come as a thought.

An image,

A sensation somewhere in your body.

Maybe it's a character,

An entity you can see.

Or you might just.

.

.

Sense it there.

Notice it.

Your depressed part,

Has intelligence.

What does it know about your life?

If you'd like me to guide you through some inner work.

To learn from and help your depressed part.

Use the meditation that's just my voice,

So close your eyes through it if that moves you in deeper.

Through inner work like this,

You can.

Find the true cause of your depression and directly tend to it in ways that bring change.

Try this.

Next time you feel depressed.

Make some room for it.

Sit up or stand straighter dropping your shoulders Breathe in slowly.

Turn your attention inward.

To exactly what you are experiencing.

Show up for it.

Say to it,

I am here.

What do you want me to know?

There is a you.

That can listen.
